My HP Envy keeps shutting down and resetting randomly during very important tasks. I’ve already been through this forum and someone suggested i turn off automatic restart but all that does is freeze my computer screen. Every time i switch google windows there’s a chance it’ll randomly freeze its very annoying

Hi @gabsant

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue so clearly—random shutdowns and freezes during critical tasks are deeply disruptive, and it’s clear you’ve already tried some of the common suggestions without success.

Let’s walk through a structured recovery path that targets both hardware and software causes.

Step-by-Step Fix for HP Envy Random Shutdowns and Freezes

1. Check for Overheating

  • Overheating is a common cause of sudden shutdowns.
  • Use a tool like HWMonitor or CoreTemp to check CPU and GPU temperatures.
  • Clean the vents and fans using compressed air.
  • Consider using a cooling pad if the laptop runs hot during multitasking.

2. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly → choose F2.
  • Run System Tests and Component Tests, especially for memory and storage.
  • This will help identify failing RAM, SSD, or thermal sensors.

3. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

  • Visit your model’s support page:
    HP Envy Drivers & BIOS
  • Download and install the latest BIOS, chipset, and graphics drivers.
  • These updates often resolve instability and freezing issues.

4. Disable Fast Startup

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup → Save changes.
  • This can prevent boot-related glitches.

5. Check Event Viewer for Crash Logs

  • Press Windows + X → select Event Viewer.
  • Go to Windows Logs > System and look for Critical or Error entries around the time of shutdowns.
  • Common culprits include:
    • Kernel-Power (Event ID 41)
    • BugCheck
    • Disk or ACPI errors

6. Test with Clean Boot

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  • Under Services, check Hide all Microsoft services → click Disable all.
  • Under Startup, open Task Manager and disable all items.
  • Restart your laptop and observe behavior.

This helps isolate third-party software conflicts.

You’ve clearly done everything right by seeking help and trying initial fixes. Let’s make sure your HP Envy runs reliably so you can focus on your work without interruptions.

If you'd like help interpreting Event Viewer logs or checking driver versions, I’m here to assist.
