HP Notebook - 15-ac137cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When looking at my desktop home page, I wish to drag a file to drop somewhere else on my desktop. When I start to drag, the desktop reboots. It will not let me copy and past either as it will reboot the home screen. Will not let me create a new file folder to drop docs in.

I have run all types of diagnostics HP offers along with others with no luck getting this corrected.

Not sure if this is hardware or software issue.

Thanks

DJ

Hi Vince and thank you very much for the assistance with the Windows restart issue.

My notebook doesn't reboot each time. When I'm on the Windows 10 homescreen is when this screen goes away

after I put cursor on a file folder or any other icon, this screen reboots.  I changed the settings so I could get an error message

as suggested and can't find where the error message might be stored?

Not having much luck with my unit and appericate all your advice for helping all.

Thanks,

Doug3772

Hello Vince, I've found an error message after folling your guidelines for error codes. I've taken some screen shots that might provide some of the issues having when Windows home screen reboots.

@Doug3772,

Thanks for troubleshooting, Iappreciate all your efforts and patience.

Here are some addtional steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Step 1

Uninstall third-party antivirus.

If you have any third party antivirus installed, uninstall it. Try to uninstall using your antivirus removal tool, which you can find on the antivirus developer website.

It is important to note that when removing a third-party antivirus, Windows will not be unprotected, as it has its own integrated security system (Windows defender), which will be automatically enabled when you restart your computer.

Step 2

Update computer drivers.

Access the website of the manufacturer of your equipment and by model, download and install all drivers compatible with Windows 10 or the latest such as video card, network card, USB, chipset, Bios.

Step 3

Disable all third-party programs, that is, a clean startup, to see if any of the programs installed on your computer may be causing this behavior.

1. On the Desktop, simultaneously press the Windows + R keys to open Run;

2. In Run, type MSCONFIG and click OK to open the System Configuration;

3. On the Services tab, check the option Hide all Microsoft services and click Disable All;

4. Click Apply and OK;

5. Restart the computer.

NOTE: This procedure disables all third party services and programs. You can later, if the problem is solved in this way, selectively enable the programs and services that will start with Windows, instead of keeping all disabled. If the problem returns after activating the startup of a specific service or program, the problem is exactly in the startup of this software and it is recommended to remove it.

Step 4

Clean up temporary system files.

1. On the Desktop, simultaneously press the Windows + R hot keys to open Run.

2. Now type TEMP and click OK.

3. The TEMP folder will open, please permanently delete all files inside the folder, if some files are not deleted it will be normal as they may be in use.

4. Again press the Windows + R hot keys simultaneously to open Run.

5.Enter %TEMP% and click OK.

6. The %TEMP% folder will open, please permanently delete all files inside the folder, if some files are not deleted it will be normal as they may be in use.

7. Again press the Windows + R hot keys simultaneously to open Run.

8. Type Prefetch and click OK.

9. The Prefetch folder will open, please permanently delete all files inside the folder, if some files are not deleted it will be normal as they may be in use.

Step 5

Run the System File Checker (SFC.exe) to search for and fix corrupted files.

1.Click the Windows + X keys simultaneously;

2. In the options that appear, click on Command Prompt (Admin);

3.In the Command Prompt screen, type SFC /SCANNOW and press Enter (this procedure will take a few minutes).

After running this tool, a report will be presented with the files corrected or not.

Step 6

Run the DISM Command that does Windows Image Management and Maintenance.

1.Click the Windows + X keys simultaneously;

2. In the options that appear, click on Command Prompt (Admin);

3. On the Command Prompt screen, type the commands below in the order presented:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth (enter)
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (enter)

If this solution hit the spot, please come back and click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left of the public post, as that would make our day!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
