HP Pavilion 15 Notebook Plugged in, Not Charging

Product Name: HP Pavilion 15-p100 Notebook PC series
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hello,

I have a HP Pavilion Notebook 15, running Windows 8.1 64 bit and recently have been receiving a message stating that when my battery is connected to the AC Adapter, it is "plugged in, not charging".  This only occurs sometimes and if I unplug and reinsert the AC Adapter, it will eventually solve the issue.  However, I would like to solve this issue before it becomes more serious.

I recently had my computer looked at and cleaned under the guise of maintenance as I have had it for over 2 years or so now.  I have attempted to try different AC Adapters, different batteries, and have run the HP Support Assistant battery check, which at first yielded no issues, but now says "battery status unknown, unable to access the battery".

What should my next step be in order to solve this issue?  At this point, I feel that the issue is within the laptop itself rather than with the AC Adapter or with the battery.

Re: HP Pavilion 15 Notebook Plugged in, Not Charging

Hello @It_WinSec,

I tried all the steps suggested according to your article, and verified using all the steps and the component test that my AC Adapter is not the problem.  My battery in the component test showed a charge capacity of 55% and that calibration is required, so I will attempt that tonight (as it takes 4 hours apparently), and will report back about the results.

In the mean time, is there anything else that is suggested that I do?

Re: HP Pavilion 15 Notebook Plugged in, Not Charging

Try the calibration and let me know how it goes.

After that,

  1. Click Start and type control.exe in the search field to open Control Panel
  2. Open Device Manager
  3. Expand the Batteries category
  4. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall. Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.
  5. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes . Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes. ( After the uninstallation process you can also restart the system for Windows to automatically detect the driver and reinstall it. ) Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.

  6. Go to Start and type control.exe in the search field to open Control Pane
  7. Open Windows Updates and attempt to update it
  8. Make sure your drivers are updated - use HP Support Assistant >> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467905

Hope this helps! Let me know if any progress

Hello,

I already attempted this process of calibration, with no change in result, multiple times (about 3 to be exact).

Re: HP Pavilion 15 Notebook Plugged in, Not Charging

OK, thank you.

And did you try the Windows suggestion ? Any progress on them ?

If you did try everything above but nothing helped, I am afraid you will need to bring your computer (or ship it) to service - HP Authorized service center. If the computer is still under warranty or any active Care Packs, you will need to notify HP support first. If you are not sure where such a center is located, please contact HP support for assistance in finding one.

Re: HP Pavilion 15 Notebook Plugged in, Not Charging

Hello,

I will attempt to manually calibrate my battery and if that still does not solve the issue I will find an authorized dealer.

Unfortunately, I am currently out of the country and am unsure if I can find a dealer anywhere near me.
