HP Pavilion - 15-cc195cl
Microsoft Windows 11

Recently upgraded to Windows 11 via a push update late last year. Upgraded via download, no problem for a few months. But then I got a boot error, and not having a boot disc or easily available Win 11 recovery disc available, I am not able to recover my laptop. I'd love it if HP could send me a Win 11 recovery disc free of charge, but I don't know the hoops I'll have to jump through for that. I'm usually a late adopter for new OS' (and I've heard Win 11 and 10 are basically the same), but I dunno, it screwed something up. It's booting with an error I've never seen before (not a direct MBR error), I'll see if I can attach the image I have gotten with it.

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change is the cause. To fix the problem:

     1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.

     2. Choose your language settings, and then click 'Next'

     3. Click 'Repair your computer'

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

     File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD

     Status: 0xc000000f (?)

Info: The Best Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors."

I purchased a universal Windows repair disc off of ebay which had tools for Win 10, but it can't recognize my boot SSD drive. I attempted to create an image of Win 10 repair tools on a USB drive, but it couldn't read that either. That's why I'm thinking I need an original OEM 'recovery' or installation disc so I can boot into windows with that and then utilize the repair tools. I've done this tons before with my comps that had Win 8, but this one is giving me troubles.

Any ideas, friends? Thanks in advance!

Hi:

Since your notebook did not come with Windows 11, HP would not have W11 recovery media.

You can make your own W11 installation/repair media by using the second option at the link below to create a bootable USB W11 installer.

Download Windows 11 (microsoft.com)

After the installation media is created boot from it, and when you get to the Install Now screen, on the lower left corner of that screen will be a Repair your PC option that you can select and use the various tools to try and repair the installation.

Worst case scenario is you can use the installation media to clean install W11 on your PC.

If you need to recover any files, then you can install W11 over the existing Windows partition and it will create a Windows.old folder.

After W11 has completed installing you can explore the Windows.old folder, find your old user files and copy the files you need to save to your new W11 user profile or a portable hard drive.

Your notebook is also supported by the HP cloud recovery tool that you can use to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook.

Here is an info link for how to use that utility.  You will need to have access to another Windows PC running W7 64 bit or newer and a 32 GB USB flash drive to create the recovery media.

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 10) | HP® Customer Support

You cannot use the cloud recovery tool recovery media to repair your existing installation.

That will format the hard drive and reinstall the original drive configuration and all existing data you have on the drive will be lost.

Thanks so much for the excellent suggestions! I will try these and hopefully will find a solution.
