Hi Greg,

In my case it was definitely a problem with the mainboard of the Spectre. A lot of people have the same problem. Unfortunately HP's only help was to assist in Bios settings and updating the Bios. After that it was clear the mainboard failed and all help stopped. I could either drop the case or pay for a (very expensive) new mainboard. I didnt expect a top of the line HP laptop to fail after 3 years. This was the last time I have bought an expensive HP laptop. Not worth it if you can only use it a couple of years. Apparently HP only gives 1 year of guarantee. Says enough about their confidence in the product I guess.

i suspect you had no charging at all. As I presented in my post, what charges my computer (barrel connector or USB C) and when it charges (off or running) and if it can charge while running all varies, changes about every other Windows Insider build... recently one of my 2 USB C ports started acting differently.

Very unhappy with this erratic behavior.... it's not the motherboard, I have the current bios, it's a mixture of Windows buggering the charging controls, and HP must have some vagaries in how it works.

All in all, very disappointed with HP that they cannot insulate us from this happening on a $2,000 laptop. I bought it because it was one of the few 6 core i7's available, next time I will wait for Lenovo.

I am also having this problem on my Spectre x360. Recently the battery stopped being charged (though it was stuck at 77% when the problem first occurred, at some point I got it back up to 94%, but now no further charging).

It doesn't say "Plugged in, not charging" however (which is a problem I had and solved on a previous laptop), it just says "Plugged in" (but clearly isn't charging). Is this what others have experienced, or are people getting the full "plugged in, not charging" message?

I have tried to battery reset options (hold power off for 15 seconds, also tried 30 seconds), but no luck. When I turn the laptop on (with AC plugged in) the LED turns to orange for maybe 5 seconds, but then turns white and stays that way, even though the battery is not fully charged.

Similar problem experienced by others? Any chance it's a software/BIOS issue?

I just got  new bios pushed out the morning I left for CES. Laptop will not charge from HP power supply, and new incarnation of "charging hell", this time would only charge from PD port if:

  • system off
  • hp charger in barrel connector
  • something supplying voltage in type C port (even 5 volts)

Change any of the above and no charging, i.e. turn on computer and charging indicator turns off, remove type C and won't charge in any configuration.

If this was not the exact form factor I need with a 6 core processor I would throw it in the trash. As soon as Lenovo or Dell get the 6 core in a light 15" I am history. So disappointed in this. Microsoft says it is HP, HP says it is Microsoft. I cannot sent my computer back and do without it for a week while they swap out the motherboard.

Hi!

I had sort of the same thing. In my case the laptop was not charging at all (adapter was not detected). At one time it started charging again after a series of resets and unplugging the battery, but after 2 weeks, laptop failed completely. Eventually after a lot of contacts with HP support, I bought a Lenovo. Apparently even a HP top of the line laptop only has 12 months guarantee.  Says something about the trust a company has in their product I guess. Really sad, because overall I really like the Spectre and Envy series.
