Hello HP Community,
I want to start by expressing my admiration for the HP Omen series; the engineering and performance of these laptops are truly impressive. However, I'm currently experiencing a serious issue with my HP Omen 17 laptop (cb-1000 series, specifically cb1009tx) after a recent BIOS update (version F44) installed via a Microsoft update (released on August 15, 2024). After flashing the BIOS and restarting, my laptop displays a black screen while the fans run at maximum speed.
I’ve encountered a CMOS error 502 when pressing Win + V, and using Win + B without a USB causes the system to freeze on a black screen, requiring a long press to power off. Using Win + B + USB with the latest BIOS allows for a successful flash, but then I get a BIOS error 500, and the issue persists after restarting. When trying Win + B + USB with an older BIOS version, the laptop gets stuck on a black screen again.
I attempted the 4-in-1 USB key recovery method, but unfortunately, the necessary BIOS file (08748.bin) is missing from the package despite being listed as supported.
The latest version seems to have bricked my laptop, and I can’t revert to an older version. I would greatly appreciate any guidance or solutions you can offer to help resolve this issue. Thank you so much for your assistance!
Best regards,

Hi @ycinhdj ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're facing a BIOS corruption issue after the update, leading to persistent errors. Based on your description of the CMOS error 502, BIOS error 500, and failed recovery attempts, here’s a systematic approach you can follow to attempt recovery:
Steps to Resolve BIOS Issues on HP OMEN 17-cb1009tx:
Clear CMOS and Reset BIOS:
- Perform a power reset by unplugging the laptop, removing any connected devices, and holding the power button for 30 seconds. This discharges any residual power.
- Next, attempt the CMOS reset using Win + V again, but before doing this, try to disconnect the battery and RTC battery (if you're comfortable opening the laptop or with the help of a technician) for 15 minutes and reconnect them.
BIOS Recovery via USB (Win + B Method):
- Use Win + B + Power with a USB containing the latest or previous stable BIOS version.
- Make sure your USB drive is FAT32 formatted and only contains the BIOS recovery files.
- If this leads to BIOS Error 500, ensure the correct BIN file is used. You can download a previous BIOS version from HP’s official site for your model if available. Here’s how to proceed:
- Go to HP’s support site and look for older BIOS versions under the download section for your laptop. HP might offer archives.
- Place the BIOS update files (including the .bin file) on a FAT32 USB, ensuring that it's the correct BIOS for your specific model.
Using HP’s Dedicated BIOS Recovery Tool:
- If the BIOS file (08748.bin) is missing, manually download and extract the BIOS recovery tool from HP’s official website for your specific model:
- Go to HP’s Omen 17 BIOS page and download the BIOS file.
- Extract the files and copy them to a USB drive formatted to FAT32.
- Use Win + B + Power with the USB inserted to flash the BIOS.
Recovering via HP BIOS Recovery Software:
- Download and run HP BIOS Recovery from another computer:
- Prepare a USB recovery drive using the HP BIOS recovery utility, which is designed to create a bootable USB to restore the BIOS from outside the OS environment.
- Run this tool on a different working PC, choosing your model to create the recovery drive.
- Boot your Omen using the recovery USB created by this tool.
Refer to this document: OMEN Laptop - 17-cb1009tx User manual
HP PCs - 500, 501, or 502 error displays on a black screen
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I am facing the same problem. Error 502 then BIOS update through recovery tool with latest firmware and then error 500. It is unacceptable to have such a problem after a firmware update via windows update.

Hello, I have faced the same issue after updating to f.44 via microsoft update.
Specs: omen-17T-CB100 series | 10750h | 2080 super
Downgrading using WIN + B method didn't help, reinstalling the same f.44 via WIN + B neither.
Please do something ASAP. Our machine has turned into a brick...

From what I have checked online the only method right now to bring the laptop back to life is to have the BIOS microchip taken out and reflashed (google HP Omen 17-cb1176ng - The CMOS Checksum is invalid - CMOS Reset 502). I have already sent mine to a repair shop which will cost me around 100€
When I talked with the repair shop they asked me if I had done a clean install of the Windows, meaning deleting all of the partions and formated the drive or used an all new drive, which I had done. As they told me the tools for the BIOS firmware update are included in a partion of the factory drive and if you delete this, then this problem could happen. So, never update the firmware through windows update. Once I have the laptop back, I will confirm that this method works.

I clean installed windows 11 and microsoft updated automatically to f.44. I could've installed the windows software of f.43 manually before letting the windows updates to f.44 but I didn't know 44 has issues.

I just got my laptop back from the repair shop and it is back to life! As they told me they had to flash both BIOS chips (primary and secondary) and they succesfully installed the F44 version (I checked with cpu-z and confirmed it) The cost was 100€ as I mentioned above.

Hello.
Im on the same boat.
For some reason, the my Omen 17 Ck 1020nr just stopped working, took it to a repair shop, and they couldnt find the original version of BIOS. So right now I have a big brick of what used to be an OMEN laptop. Thanks HP.
BTW: Talked to OMEN support, they told me to send it to HP, they would replace the whole motherboard and charge me US 500. Really disappointed.
