Please help! When setting up my Microsoft account on my new laptop I accidentally forgot part of my email address. What do I do? My pin does not work and I can not reset it because the information is being sent to the wrong email address. This computer is brand new I’ve never even had a chance to use it. Please help!

Hi @Joe_Brissey,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. I can imagine how frustrating and helpless it must feel to be locked out of a brand-new HP laptop before even getting a chance to use it. Let’s work through this together gently and get you back in.

Here’s What You Can Do to Fix It

1. Try to Restart in Recovery Mode

This will help you bypass the PIN and access account recovery options.

  • Hold down the Shift key and click Restart from the login screen.
  • Choose Troubleshoot → Reset this PC → Remove everything.
  • If prompted, choose Local reinstall.

This will wipe the device and let you set it up again with the correct Microsoft account.

2. Use a Local Account Instead (Temporary Fix)

If you can access the recovery environment:

  • Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Command Prompt
  • Type: net user tempuser /add
                net localgroup administrators tempuser /add
  • Restart and log in with tempuser.
  • You can then reset the PC and set up your Microsoft account correctly.

3. Contact Microsoft Account Recovery Support

If you remember part of the email, you can try recovering it:

👉 Help with the Microsoft account recovery form - Microsoft Support

You’ll need:

  • Any alternate email or phone number linked to the account.
  • Details like previous passwords or services used.

4. Factory Reset via HP Cloud Recovery (If Nothing Else Works)

If you’re completely locked out and can’t access recovery options:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
