HP 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cp0000 (2Q7W8AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I always used to use my school/work account to log into my laptop, but after my school/work account got disabled for personal reasons, it wouldn't allow me to sign into that said account anymore (the account with administrator). After troubleshooting the issue by restarting my laptop, The account got deleted off of my laptop. Now, after trying countless times to enable administrator permissions, it asks for an admin username and password, which I don't have anymore because that account got deleted. Also, when I tried to type in the command "net user administrator /active:yes" it said "System 5 error"

And then, I tried to use safe mode to recover administrator permissions, which didn't work. I don't care if it's on any account, I just need to be able to log into an account with administrator permissions so I can download stuff without it asking for an admin username and password. Can anyone help me solve this issue?

Hi @Jordan_lamonte,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for explaining the situation, Manjunath. Losing access to your administrator account can be incredibly frustrating, especially when it's tied to a school or work account that’s now disabled. Recommended steps for handling this on your HP 17.3" Laptop PC 17-cp0000 (2Q7W8AV) running Windows 11:

Steps to Regain Administrator Access

1. Use Local Account Recovery (if available)

If you had a local account (not tied to school/work), try logging in with it. If not, proceed to the next step.

2. Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to Create a New Admin Account

You’ll need to boot into Command Prompt via recovery mode:

  1. Force Restart 3 Times
    • Hold the power button to shut down.
    • Turn it on and shut down again as soon as the HP logo appears.
    • Do this 3 times to trigger Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Access Command Prompt
    • In WinRE, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt.
  3. Create a New Admin Account. In the Command Prompt, type:
      net user NewAdmin /add
      net localgroup administrators NewAdmin /add

3. Replace NewAdmin with any username you want.

  1. Restart and Log In
    • Restart the laptop.
    • Log in with the new account.
    • You now have administrator access.

If You See “System Error 5”

This means you're trying to run the command without admin privileges. That’s why you must use Command Prompt from WinRE, not from within a standard account.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
