I paid $475 for an hp laptop in dec of 2020 it didn't last 6 mths. I look on their website the warranty expired in 2017, 3 yrs b4 i bght it. Thats got to b illegal. I wonder if i can see a lawyer about that. They cant sell **bleep** they know is messed up. And i have my recipet

You may have your receipts -- but your "facts" are all wrong! Before you spend THOUSANDS for legal fees, you might want to get them right!
The warranty is set at the Factory when the PC is Built -- not when it is sold. It is common for a device to sit in a warehouse for months until it sells. So a PC build in January will have its warranty expire the next January. If it is not sold until June, that is not the fault of HP. So, claiming it is "illegal" is just plain silly!
You were to prompted to Register this after you bought it -- and that should have reset the warranty start date. If you did not do that, once again, that is not HP's fault.
Go ahead and carry out your thread to spend THOUSANDS of dollars -- but it will do you no good.

When you first purchased the computer and then Registered it,
you would (could) have checked the Warranty status.
Warranty date set at the manufacture date of the computer:
When you purchase an HP computer from HP or from an authorized seller,
The process is available to submit a Warranty Dispute form to have an incorrect Warranty date changed to match the purchase date.
Question: Why a computer purchased new in 2020 would have a Warranty date of 2017
It is certainly possible that a computer can sit on a shelf for years before being sold (at other than the HP Store).
That is an opinion - our Community is not HP Support - only HP speaks for HP.
What to do?
If the computer is still in your possession months after it failed but before the purchase date,
You should submit that Warranty Dispute form.

- Case submission to HP Support is available to those whose devices registered and are still in Warranty.
- Not every issue is covered under the standard Hardware Warranty. Purchased Care Pack Warranties differ by contract.
- HP is not a "general" repair facility: Requests for out-of-warranty repairs are generally not accepted.
- If the problem is hardware, if your device is in Warranty, if your device is Registered, and you cannot submit your case to Support, let us know and we will forward a request.

Out of Warranty? What to do...
For those of us who are "Out of Warranty" people, submitting a case to HP is not an option.
HP Support does not generally provide free service for out-of-warranty devices.
Our Community is not HP Support; we do offer help free of charge.

Warranty Check – Single or Multiple Devices
NOTE: Warranty date is updated after purchase and registration of the device.
If the device is not registered, or if there are other issues, submit a Warranty Dispute form.
NOTE 2: If the single-system-check fails to find your device, use the "multiple devices" method to
check single or multiple devices.
- If necessary, Select your Country on the main website page or at the bottom (click Flag)
- Scroll down > To the right of Check multiple warranties, Click Continue
- Enter the Serial Number and Country for one or more devices / systems to be checked
- Check the box to verify you are "Not a robot"
- Click Submit (at bottom of list entries)
- When the page opens, Click View Details
