Hi @MDC-UK,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Q78 firmware update keeps failing and you’re seeing a “lack of resources” popup on every restart. Let’s go through a few steps to troubleshoot this:

Check Available Disk Space

Ensure your system drive (usually C:) has enough free space for the update.

Free up at least 10–15% of your drive if it’s nearly full.

Close Background Applications

Close all unnecessary programs, especially antivirus, backup software, or heavy applications running in the background.

Use Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to check for high memory or CPU usage.

Restart Before Updating

Perform a clean restart to ensure all temporary processes are cleared.

After restart, immediately run the firmware update.

Run Update as Administrator

Right-click the update executable or HP Support Assistant and select “Run as administrator”.

Update HP Support Software

Ensure HP Support Assistant or other HP management software is up-to-date, as outdated software can cause resource errors.

Check for Windows Updates

Make sure your operating system is fully updated. Pending updates can block firmware installations.

Try Manual Firmware Update

Download the latest firmware directly from the HP website for your model.

Follow the manual installation instructions rather than using the automatic updater.

Clear Temporary Files

Use Disk Cleanup or Windows Storage Sense to remove temporary files that may interfere with the update.

Check Event Viewer

Open Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System to see if any errors correspond with the failed firmware update. This can give clues about the “lack of resource” issue.

I hope this helps.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍
