@Irene0777, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble logging into your HP laptop. Let's walk through a few steps to help you regain access:

Confirm the Type of Account

Are you using a Microsoft account (email-based login) or a local account (username/password stored on the device)?

  • If it's a Microsoft account, resetting the password online is the correct approach.
  • If it's a local account, the online reset won't work, you'll need to reset it directly on the laptop.

Reset Microsoft Account Password

If you're using a Microsoft account, follow these steps:

  1. Go to https://account.live.com/password/reset
  2. Choose "I forgot my password" and follow the prompts.
  3. Once reset, restart your laptop and try logging in again.

If the password still doesn’t work, make sure:

  • You're connected to the internet.
  • You're entering the new password correctly (check Caps Lock and keyboard layout).

Use HP's Recovery Options (If Password Still Doesn’t Work)

If you're locked out and the password reset didn’t help, try HP's recovery options:

Use a Password Reset Disk or Safe Mode (Advanced)

If you had created a password reset disk earlier, you can use it now.

Alternatively, boot into Safe Mode and try accessing the hidden Administrator account:

  1. Restart the laptop and press F8 or Shift + F8 repeatedly before Windows loads.
  2. Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
  3. If successful, type:net user administrator /active:yes
  4. Restart and log in as Administrator, then reset your user password.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!

After changing your password online, did you see a message confirming it was successful?
