HP Envy 15 (2013)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I received an Recovery USB (32GB) for my laptop with WIn 8 (OEM) which is today useless. I want to re-purpose the USB as a recovery drive for the current Win 10 OS. However, the drive seems to be locked and I am not not able to formate or delete or overwrite. Please advise if there is a way, i can do that.

Thank you in advance for your help!

@kummah Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are unable to install the Windows 10 operating system.

Please perform the hard drive test and check.

1) Shutdown the computer.

2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.

3) Press F2 once.

4) Go to Component test.

5) From the list, run the Hard Drive (extensive) test.

Please try for the HP cloud recovery.

Hi Praveen196,

I do not have a problem with my laptop or with Windows. My OEM pendrive is not formattable because it is locked. Is it possible to reuse it by deleting the content or formatting it?

Currently, it does not allow.

@kummah

I understand your concerns.

In that case, you have to use the third party software to format the flash drive.

or you will have to delete the whole partition using the disk management then create a new partition in it and then format.

Have a nice day!!

Hi Praveen,

In disk management, the delete/format options are not highlighted for the pen drive. I have tried some 3rd party app, diskpart, etc. It looks like the pendrive is locked or some kind of write-protect.

It is a 32GB PD, i thought I could reuse for something else!

Please advice if you have any specific recommendation of 3rd party SW to reformat the PD.

Thanks In Advance!

I will write to the mentioned email address.

However, Let me restate my query. With my HP Envy 15 laptop, i received a 32GB recovery pendrive (PD) based on Win8 in 2013. That recovery drive and the Win8 edition is useless now. I wanted to reformat the PD so I could use for something else. However, my attempts to do that have been futile, as mentioned earlier.

I was looking for help to reformat the PD so that i could use it for something else. If this is the wrong forum, I apologise and request you to point me to the right one.

I understand your concerns.

In that case, I would suggets you conatct our phone support and check for the support option. They will help you.

Here is how you can get in touch with phone support.

1)Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/

2)Select the product type.

3)Enter the serial number of your device or select let HP detect your product option.

4)Select the country from the drop-down.

5)You should see the HP phone support number or Chat option listed.

We are experiencing longer than expected wait times to reach an agent due to the CoViD-19 impact and there might have been issues in you getting the expected resolution on the issue.
