My sister in law give me her 5 year old laptop but it had a bad bard drive. I installed a new SS 250 gig. I had made the recovery drive using a 16 gig USB when she first got it. I used a USB drive . The problem is it in taking forever to get things back. Got to be a faster way ? Updates are taking forever.
I tried the Create Windows 10 installation media. It worked fine and windows was back on fast with version 21H2 but lots of drivers missing. I go to support for this laptop and it shows lots of different ones. I don't have a clue which drivers to install. Windows 10 did install some of these drivers but not all.
What is the best way to get this laptop back going. Product X0H85UA

Hello @trig123
(1) Update BIOS
HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) | F.50 Rev.A | 27.8 MB | Jan 22, 2021 | Download |
(2) Install Support Assistant and start it to update all drivers in one place and check for hardware driver/issues
HP Support Assistant | 8.6.18.11 Rev.A | 34.2 MB | May 4, 2018 | Download |
or here
https://support.hp.com/us-en/help/hp-support-assistant
(3) Reboot and test again ...
best regards

I did flash the BIOS. That part did work. I rebooted and still drivers missing but not as many. I just redid it using the flash drive I made 5 years ago. All the drivers are there after using it. .
Its just taking forever. Working on installing 20H2 right now and next would be 21H2.
Just wondering why its so much of a problem to just install windows and try and find the correct drivers from the HP website ? 24 different drivers just for the chipset and 21 more just for Graphics and didn't have a clue which one works.
If I have the correct model number and serial number why would HP put all these different drivers on their site ? and then make me wonder which ones to download ?
I have dealt with this before but this laptop seems to have so many more different drivers to choose from. Oh well , for now I will wait and see how it runs after I finish with doing it from the 5 year old backup I did the day she bought it.
edit
I did download the support assist and it said no drivers were needed yet there were five in device manager that needed updating.

Thanks for all the great help. I was able to get it back using the USB drive we made five years ago. All drivers are now working. Took a while but I am retired and have the time.
What is the best option for backing up the drive now being my partition is gone ? or just don't worry about it being I still have the recovery USB I made five years ago ? Again I appreciate the help. This computer runs like a new one with the SS drive. Windows 10- 21H2 is now running .

You're very welcome.
I recommend you make periodic system images of your current installation
I use the free Macrium Reflect software to do that, under the Backup at Home section.
Along with the system image, make sure you create the bootable DVD or USB rescue drive you boot from to access the system image stored on your portable hard drive.

I haven't used this computer since my last post. Today when I booted it I was prompted to sign in with a Microsoft account. I set it up using a local account and was wondering why now am I being asked to do this. I get the welcome to windows with blue background. I walked away without doing anyway and when I came back it was on the desktop like It was when I last used this laptop.
How can I avoid this in the future or will I be able to ? I also got a pop up about an 80 % saving for McAfee which I sure don't want.
I assume this was because I used the backup USB disk I made five years ago to install windows. . Maybe I j can just redo this thing and get the drivers because I don't want this bloatware. I can look into device manager and see which drivers I need before I wipe this hard drive . I hope there is a way without doing this. I just looked and McAfee is listed in software not set up. Maybe download the cleaning tool from McAfee ? Any tips appreciated.
