Is there anyone who should know that a laptop I purchased has been stolen? it seems that telling anyone is pointless these days

Well, telling us won't help and HP doesn't track stolen property.

I am sorry it happened - it is sad and hard to take on top of so much else going on...

That said, you should certainly report the incident to the local police department.

Why?

If nothing else, if the police find a pile of presumably stolen computers, and you have reported yours - the police have a better chance of convicting the rat-thieves since they have proof the computer is stolen goods.

Report the loss to your insurance company, too.

IF you had "locate my device" switched on (Windows) and IF the thieves are silly enough to boot the computer anywhere near your location, you might get notice of it so you can call the police or perhaps shut off the device.

Thieves are terrible people - they are desperate and might lack the moral compass that guides the rest of us.
