My HP laptop is four years old and the battery is toast so I know I need to replace it.  However, it still has problems starting up even when plugged in.  I'd say this issue happens about 40% of the time whenever I start it up.  The computer will turn on and sounds like it's operating normally and then I will just get a blank or dark gray colored screen.  I end up having to power it off and turn it back on once or twice for it to start functioning again.  Once I am able to turn it back on, the laptop works great and has no issues at all.  Is there any other issue besides the battery that I should look into?

Thank you

@Saralince, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Hard Reset

Turn off your laptop.

Unplug it and remove the battery (if you can).

Hold the power button for 15 seconds.

Plug it back in and turn it on.

Check Battery and Adapter

Try turning on the laptop without the battery (just using the power adapter).

If it works without the battery, then the battery is likely the problem.

Check Display

Connect an external monitor to see if it’s a display issue.

Try adjusting brightness with the function keys (e.g., Fn + F4).

Update BIOS and Drivers

Go to HP Support, search for your laptop model, and update the BIOS.

In Device Manager, right-click your graphics driver and select "Update."

Run Diagnostics

Press ESC when the laptop starts, then press F2 to run HP's diagnostics tool.

This checks for any hardware issues.

Repair Windows

Create a bootable USB with Windows 10/11 and use the Startup Repair option to fix system problems.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your response and suggestions!  I just saw the reply because it went to my spam folder.

I cannot remove the battery from this laptop, but I do know it is very weak according to the test I ran on it earlier.   It has been turning on without issue for the last couple of days, but it is hit or miss.  I am just going to buy a new laptop since I don't want to chance it with this one and it gets heavy use since I work from home on it.

Thank you again
