My laptop was updating and shut down unexpectedly, it’s now stuck on a black screen saying “undoing changes made to your computer” and has been like this for about half an hour.

Before it shut down it was stuck on the update for about 2 hours without progressing.

I need to use it ASAP for university work and I don’t want to lose the work that’s stored on it as it’s really important. Please help!!

This is not a personal criticism -- but all hardware fails, eventually -- which is why, if you can't afford to lose something, you need to spend a little money and time to back that stuff onto a USB stick.

Since you apparently did not bother to do that, and your laptop now won't boot into Windows, if this were mine, I would focus on recovering the files I needed from the drive.  To do that, you will need a couple of USB sticks and to read the information below about making a boot USB you can use to boot your PC and then copy the files to the other USB stick.

If your PC can not boot into Windows, a way around that is to follow the instructions below to create boot media from Macrium Reflect (MR) that can be used to boot your PC even if the hard drive is not working:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR) from this link: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
2) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD

That will create MR bootable media. Then, you can boot your PC into WinPE using that media.

Have patience, as that can take a while to start and bring up the screen.

Once the screen is there, read this thread about using PE Explorer -- a simple file explorer: https://forum.macrium.com/PrintTopic15803.aspx

If your disk still works, you might be then able to retrieve some files and folders from it.

Good Luck
