  • I updated Windows 11 Beta build on Saturday 
  • it worked fine after update
  • it worked fine last night
  • the laptop started cycling the GSD when turned on this morning, until windows went into auto-repair mode
  • I then got an option from windows to restart or reset.  I chose to restart
  • the following cycle went to login screen, it recognized login, but then went back to GSD a couple of times
  • it then restarted and following windows popped up

  • this window keeps cycling
  • I have chosen to check the storage unit and it passes tests

What should I do to recover my laptop?

It sounds like your HP Spectre x360 is having issues after a Windows 11 Beta update, possibly due to a corrupted system file or an issue with the update itself. Here are some steps you can try to recover your laptop.

 

Boot into Safe Mode

Safe Mode can help you troubleshoot and potentially resolve issues caused by software updates.

  • Step 1: Turn off your laptop completely.
  • Step 2: Turn it back on and immediately start pressing F8 or Shift + F8 (depending on your system). This should bring up the advanced startup options.
  • Step 3: From the options, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, then click Restart.
  • Step 4: Once your laptop restarts, press 4 or F4 to boot into Safe Mode.

In Safe Mode, you can try the following:

  • Uninstall recent updates: If the update caused the issue, uninstalling it might help. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates.
  • Check for driver issues: Sometimes, updates can cause driver conflicts. Try updating your drivers or rolling back any recent updates in Device Manager.

Run System File Checker (SFC)

A corrupted system file could be causing this issue, and running a system check might resolve it.

  • Step 1: Boot into Advanced Startup Options (hold down Shift while clicking Restart).
  • Step 2: Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt.
  • Step 3: In the Command Prompt, type the following command and press Enter:

sfc /scannow
 

  • This will check and attempt to repair any corrupted system files.

Perform a System Restore

If you have restore points enabled, you can use a system restore to roll back your system to a point before the update.

  • Step 1: Boot into Advanced Startup Options.
  • Step 2: Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
  • Step 3: Follow the prompts to select a restore point before the issue started happening.

Reset Windows (Keep Files)

If the above steps don't work, you may need to reset Windows without losing your files.

  • Step 1: Boot into Advanced Startup Options.
  • Step 2: Choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
  • Step 3: Select Keep my files. This will remove apps and settings but keep personal files.
  • Step 4: Follow the prompts to complete the reset.

Reinstall Windows via Recovery Media

If the issue persists and you cannot access the recovery options, you may need to reinstall Windows completely. You can create a bootable USB with the Windows 11 installation media and perform a fresh installation.

Check the Event Viewer for Details

If you can access the login screen or boot into Safe Mode, you can also check the Event Viewer to see if there are any specific error messages related to the issue. This might give you more information on what is causing the boot issue.
