My HP Pavilion 15s-eq0132AU keeps shutting down unexpectedly. After two shutdowns, it automatically opens the system diagnostics and asks me to wait 30 minutes while it searches for a solution, but nothing really happens. The issue only occurs when the laptop is not charging—when it’s plugged in, it works fine. However, I can’t keep it charging all the time

Hi @evanbose2002,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Pavilion 15s-eq0132AU shuts down unexpectedly when running on battery power, and after a couple of shutdowns it boots into HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
Let’s go step-by-step to find the cause and stabilize it.

1. Check Battery Health

Since the issue happens only on battery, the battery is the first suspect.

Turn the laptop off.

Turn it back on and repeatedly tap Esc → F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI).

Choose Component Tests → Power → Battery Test.

Note the battery status (e.g., “OK”, “Weak”, “Replace”).If the test reports Weak or Replace, the battery is likely the cause of the shutdowns.

2. Update BIOS and Power Drivers

While plugged in and on the internet, run HP Support Assistant (or go to HP Support site → enter your product ID).

Install the latest:

BIOS update

Chipset/Power Management drivers

Restart the laptop after updates.

Out-of-date BIOS or power drivers can cause abrupt shutdowns when switching between AC power and battery.

3. Run a Quick Battery Calibration

Sometimes the system mis-reads the charge level and powers off too early.

Charge the battery to 100%.

Disconnect the AC adapter and use the laptop until it shuts down due to low power.

Plug it back in and charge to 100% again without interruption.

This recalibrates the battery’s charge reporting to the system.

4. Check Windows Power & Sleep Settings

Go to Settings → System → Power & Battery → Power Mode.

Set it to Balanced or Best Power Efficiency.

In Advanced power settings, ensure the critical-battery action is set to Hibernate or Sleep rather than Shut down.

5. Inspect the Battery and AC Port

If your model has a removable battery, reseat it to ensure good contact.

If it’s built-in, visually inspect the battery for swelling or deformation (do not puncture or press on it).

A swollen or damaged battery should be replaced immediately.

6. Observe the Battery Behavior

While running on battery:

Click the battery icon in the taskbar → watch if the charge drops suddenly or the laptop shuts off even with 30-50% shown.

Sudden drops indicate the battery cannot hold a steady voltage under load.

I hope this helps.
