Hi @AGK254,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

If your HP Spectre laptop discharges power when it’s turned off, and you notice a significant drop in battery percentage (e.g., from 100% to 90% upon opening), there could be several potential causes. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and address this issue:

1. Check Battery Health

  • Run HP Battery Diagnostics:
    1. Restart your laptop and press F2 to enter the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    2. Select Battery Test to check the health of your battery.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to run a diagnostic test and review the results.

2. Check Power Settings and Fast Startup

Disable Fast Startup:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  2. Click on Choose what the power buttons do.
  3. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  4. Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended) and click Save changes.
  5. Restart your laptop and observe if the issue persists.

Adjust Power Settings:

  1. Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
  2. Check if there are any settings that might affect battery behavior when the laptop is off.

3. Update BIOS and Drivers

  • Update BIOS:
    1. Visit the HP Support website and search for the latest BIOS update for your model.
    2. Follow the instructions to download and install the BIOS update.
  • Update Drivers:
    1. Go to Device Manager (right-click on Start button).
    2. Update the drivers for battery and power management devices.

4. Check Battery Calibration

  • Calibrate the Battery:
    1. Charge the battery to 100%.
    2. Use the laptop on battery power until it discharges completely and shuts down.
    3. Fully charge the battery again to 100%.
    4. This process can help recalibrate the battery indicator.

Please find the remaining steps In the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @AGK254,

Please find the remaining steps below.

5. Inspect the Battery and Power Adapter

  • Inspect for Battery Issues:
    • If possible, test with another battery (if your model allows it) to see if the issue persists.
  • Inspect the Power Adapter:
    • Ensure that the power adapter and charging port are not damaged.

6. Check for Background Applications

  • Ensure No Background Applications are Running:
    • Some applications or system processes might cause power drain even when the laptop is off. Check Task Manager for any unusual processes before shutting down.

7. Perform a System Reset

  • Reset the Power Settings:
    1. Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
    2. Choose Reset this PC if other troubleshooting steps don’t resolve the issue. Make sure to back up your data first.

8. Battery Drain During Sleep Mode

  • Check Sleep Mode Settings:
    • If the laptop is not shutting down completely but entering a low-power sleep state, adjust the settings to ensure it is shutting down fully.

9. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Firmware Updates:
    • Sometimes, firmware updates can fix battery issues. Check the HP website for any available firmware updates for your Spectre model.

The power drain issue could be due to battery health, fast startup settings, outdated BIOS/drivers, or even a calibration issue.

Start by running diagnostics and updating your BIOS and drivers. Disabling fast startup and recalibrating the battery might also help. If the issue persists, consider checking with HP Phone Support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
