Please help, My HP 250 G8 laptop keeps restarting instead of resuming whenever I put it to Sleep or when the display turns off.

  • Shutdown works fine now (it used to restart, but that stopped after i turned off fast boot).
  • I have already:

Updated the BIOS to the latest version.

Reinstalled the Intel Chipset, Management Engine Interface (MEI), and Graphics drivers from HP’s official support page.

Disabled Fast Startup in Windows.

Verified that Hybrid Sleep is not available (system only supports S3 + Hibernate).

Run memory and hardware diagnostics (no issues found).

  • Tested with hibernate, and it doesn't work

What I’ve Observed

Event logs and bugcheck analysis show NMI_HARDWARE_FAILURE (0x80) — GenuineIntel.sys during sleep resume.

  • powercfg /a shows only Standby (S3) and hibernate available.

Removing/reinserting the main battery and holding the power button for 30+ seconds did not help.

The laptop uses the main battery as CMOS/RTC backup (no separate coin cell visible).

Hi  @Odianosen

You've already taken several thoughtful and proactive steps to troubleshoot the issue with your HP 250 G8 laptop restarting instead of resuming from Sleep mode — that's really commendable. Your effort makes it much easier to narrow down the cause and find an effective solution.

Plan of action:

Device Manager - Hidden Devices:

Run devmgmt.msc, then see> "Show hidden devices".

Look for any shades of gray or problematic entries under system units (especially ACPI, Intel components).

Uninstall and restart to force re-detection.

POWER PLAN TWEAKS:

Use the PowerCFG restorothefaultschemes to reset the power settings.

Then enter advanced power settings and set manually:

Sleep> Allow hybrid sleep = of

PCI Express> Link State Power Management = Off

Processor power management> minimum processor state = 100%

Try Clean Boot (selective boot):

To exclude third -party software/driver conflicts, perform a clean boot and test sleep:

Run MSCONFIG> Selective Startup> Remove the "Upload Startup Elements" mark.

Under the "Services" tab, check "Hide all Microsoft Services"> Disable everyone.

Restart and test sleep behavior.

BIOS Settings - Security/Virtualization:

In some cases, deactivation of virtualization (VT-X/VT-D) or TPM helps under BIOS> Safety tab by eliminating NMI_hardware_Failure during sleep/CV.

Sometimes this can interact with Windows Kernel Power conditions in weird ways.

Try older Intel Graphics Driver:

Newer drivers are not always better. Try to roll back to an older version of Intel Graphics and test again.

Running uefi test using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI  v10.8.1.0 | Outside the windows

Try running uefi test on all components using latest uefi test to check any hardware issue

Find the latest link for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEF

Please find the article for how to run uefi outside the windows

** If none of the steps resolves the issue, you can go for complete clean installation using flash drive

Flash drive operating system installation

with media creation tool using 32 gb flash drive and no need to make flash drive bootable only below setup will itself do that

https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2156295

Once, operating system ISO file is generated in flash drive and restart the unit and press f9 repeatedly to enter into startup settings and select flash drive and follow the next steps to complete operating system installation

Hope this helps solve your issue
