Hi,
In my opinion it is the battery and I would replace it. You can find quality compatible batteries online for good prize. I say this because once the computer shuts down it does not restart unless you attach the ac adapter, which means the battery is most likely empty (even though it showed differently in the OS).
A last thing I would like you to try. When the system shuts down with only the battery. Attach the AC adapter and boot the computer. Remove the ac adapter as soon as the computer has booted to the OS. Does the system shut down right away again (within 10 minutes or so)?
Once the battery is fully charged, how long does it last? You could try reinstalling the battery drivers in device manager, uninstall and reboot the computer, they will install automatically again.
Let me know,
David

Hi,
First try running a HP diagnostics on the battery to see if there is a hardware problem. It could be that the battery is no longer able to keep a charge. I have seen laptops shutdown at 80% charge because the battery was defective.
Here is a link to HP support page showing how to perform test:

Hi,
A couple of questions.
Is the shutdown immediate (as if someone pulled all power from PC) or is it a "normal" Windows shutdown? Does everything work fine with ac adapter? Once the computer shuts down if you try starting the computer again without attaching the ac adapter, does it boot again and work?
Let me know,
David
