Hi @Roryhy,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your notebook is not starting and is showing a SMART Hard Disk Error. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Power Off and Restart

Turn off the notebook completely.

Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).

Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds, then reconnect power and try restarting.

Check Power Source

Make sure the wall outlet or power source is working by testing with another device.

Avoid using extension cords or surge protectors during troubleshooting.

Boot into BIOS/UEFI

Restart the notebook and press the required key (usually F2, F10, ESC, or DEL) to enter BIOS/UEFI.

Check if the hard drive is detected. If the hard drive is missing, it may have failed.

Run Hard Drive Diagnostics

Many notebooks have built-in diagnostics (often F2 or F12 during startup).

Run the hard drive test to check for errors. Note any error codes shown.

Attempt Safe Boot / Recovery

If the drive is detected, try booting from a recovery USB or Windows installation media.

Use the recovery options to attempt Startup Repair or System Restore.

Backup Data (if possible)

If the drive is partially functional, consider connecting it to another computer via USB or SATA adapter to recover important files.

Replace Hard Drive

A SMART error often indicates impending drive failure.

Replacing the hard drive (HDD/SSD) may be necessary if diagnostics confirm a failure.

I hope this helps.
