@Celee_85, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're trying to reset a forgotten password on your HP Pavilion DV6 using a password reset disc, but you're encountering the error:

"An error occurred while the wizard was attempting to set the password for the user account."

This typically happens when:

  • The password reset disc was created for a different user account or Windows version.
  • The system has been reinstalled or upgraded (e.g., from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10), making the reset disc incompatible.
  • The account you're trying to reset is not recognized properly due to corruption or permission issues.

Recommended Steps to Resolve:

Option 1: Use Safe Mode with Command Prompt (if accessible)

  1. Restart the PC and press F8 repeatedly before Windows starts.
  2. Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
  3. If you can access the command prompt, type: net user <username> <newpassword>
Replace <username> with your actual account name and <newpassword> with the new password.

Option 2: Use Windows 10 Installation Media to Reset Password

If Safe Mode doesn’t work, follow these steps:

  1. Create a Windows 10 installation USB using the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft.
  2. Boot from the USB drive.
  3. On the setup screen, press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt.
  4. Run the following commands:
    move c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe
  5. Restart the PC normally.
  6. On the login screen, click the Ease of Access icon - this will open Command Prompt.
  7. Type:net user <username> <newpassword>
  8. After resetting, restore the original file:
    copy c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe.bak c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe

⚠️ Important: This method should only be used on your own PC. HP does not endorse bypassing security on devices you do not own.

Option 3: Reset Windows (if data backup is available)

If password reset fails and you have backed up your data, you can reset Windows:

  • Boot from Windows 10 USB.
  • Choose Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
