Problem: My laptop randomly restarts during normal use (browsing, working). No blue screen, just sudden restart.

Event Viewer shows:

  • Event ID: 41, Kernel-Power
  • BugcheckCode: 0 (all parameters are 0)
  • This happens regularly, not just once

What I've already done:

  • Updated BIOS to F.16 Rev.A (September 3, 2025)
  • Checked temperatures with HWMonitor - they're normal (CPU: 40°C, motherboard: 45°C at idle)
  • The laptop is clean, no overheating issues
    1. Is this a known issue with this model?
    2. Should I update/reinstall NVIDIA RTX 4070 drivers?
    3. Any other recommendations?

The restarts happen regularly during everyday tasks. Please help!

@shiromori, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Sudden restarts without a blue screen and Kernel-Power Event ID 41 (BugcheckCode: 0) typically indicate a power delivery, driver, or hardware stability issue. You've already done a great job updating the BIOS and checking thermals. Let's go through a few targeted steps to help resolve this:

Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure

This helps reveal any hidden BSOD errors that might be causing the restart.

  • Press Win + R, type sysdm.cpl, and press Enter.
  • Go to the Advanced tab → Click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
  • Uncheck Automatically restart under System failure.
  • Click OK and restart your PC.

Update/Reinstall NVIDIA RTX 4070 Drivers

Driver issues are a known cause of random restarts and display-related errors on RTX 40-series laptops.

  • Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to completely remove existing NVIDIA drivers.
  • Download and install the latest NVIDIA Studio Driver (more stable for productivity tasks) from NVIDIA's official site.
  • Alternatively, use HP’s recommended drivers: Official HP® Support

Check Windows Power Settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Select High Performance.
  • Click Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand Processor power management → Set Minimum processor state to 5% and Maximum to 100%.
  • Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management → Set to Off.

Run HP Diagnostics

Use HP’s built-in diagnostics to check for hardware issues.

Check for Memory Stability

Some users have reported issues with DDR5 RAM and system instability.

  • If possible, reseat the RAM modules.
  • If the issue persists, consider testing with a different RAM kit or running MemTest86 overnight.

BIOS Settings

Ensure BIOS settings are default:

  • Restart and press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Load Setup Defaults (usually under Exit tab).
  • Save and Exit.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
