Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

I read your post about wanting to restore the PC and wanted to help.

Regarding the Windows on USB, unless you made that from HP Recovery Media, even if it does install, it's not going to activate from the product key on the COA sticker on the laptop.  That's because that product key will only work with the original HP OEM version of Win7.

Regarding recovery media, here are a couple of other places you can check as they tend to stock the older media:
http://www.computersurgeons.com/  and http://www.restoredisks.com/

Regarding the problem getting past partitioning, are you sure your hard drive is OK? If you can, follow the instructions in this link to test the drive:  http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00439024

If that is not possible, as is the case where the BIOS is too old to offer that function, then you will need to create a boot disk to test the drive.  You can do this using MiniTool Partition Wizard Boot CD. This is a free partitioning tool and you should download their Boot CD ISO file to a local drive on another PC: http://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/partition-magic-boot-cd.html

Once you have this, you have a choice of media to create:
1) If you can boot from CD, download and install ImgBurn and use the Write Image to Disk option to create a bootable CD.
2) If you can boot from USB, download and install RUFUS and use the option to create a bootable USB stick from the ISO file.

Boot your PC with the media you created. You should see a list of partitions that are on the drive.

Select the Surface Test option to check those partitions.

IF that fails, or if you don't see any partitions on the drive, that means your drive has failed.

If the drive has failed, you will need to replace it and then restore the PC using the recovery media.

Good Luck

Hi WAWood,

Cheers for the info , found the disks on Computer surgeons for $27. HP was no help at all......

I think the HDD is ok as I can read it with my dv7 through USB. I scanned it and repaired it. As a precaution I now have a back up of all impotant files. iTunes was running during an update when it was powered off. I assume this made a mess of the boot sector.

I just need to get back to operation and HP's bios is pretty locked down.

I have a new HDD in case but hopefully the recovery disks work. If not on to your other suggestions.

Thanks for your fast reply !!

Cheers, Jeremy
