I have downloaded the previous mentioned information to an pen drive. It gets halfway through the restore process and stops. Says unable to install and exits. I have re downloaded it on two other drives and still keep hitting the same issue. What can I do to fix this issue so it will reinstall the factory settings. I have an HP 15.6 laptop.  15-dw0081wm.

Hi @DrmWvrSerenity,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for getting back. Sorry to hear about the issue  on your HP 15-dw0081wm laptop when the recovery process fails midway:

Why This Happens

The restore process can stop if:

  • The recovery image on the USB is corrupted or incomplete.
  • The USB drive is not formatted correctly or is too slow.
  • There are bad sectors on the internal drive.
  • BIOS settings do not match the recovery environment.

 Recommended Steps

1. Use HP Cloud Recovery Tool

Instead of manually downloading, use the official HP Cloud Recovery Tool to create a fresh recovery USB:

2. Prepare Your Laptop

  • Disconnect all external devices except the power and the recovery USB.
  • Enter BIOS (F10 at startup) and:
    • Enable UEFI Boot.
    • Disable Legacy Boot.
    • Ensure Secure Boot is enabled.
  • Save and exit.

3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

Before retrying recovery:

  • Press F2 at startup → HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run Storage Test (Quick + Extensive).
  • If the SSD/HDD fails, recovery will not complete you’ll need a replacement drive.

4. Retry Recovery

  • Insert the recovery USB.
  • Press F9 at startup → Select USB device.
  • Follow on-screen instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
