HP pavilion
Microsoft Windows 8 (32-bit)

Dropped laptop. Screen went blank. After turning on it goes to "SMART disc Error" I then press enter to continue start-up. Then says "boot device not found - please install an operating system on hard your disk". I then press f2 for "system diagnostics".  I then start hard drive check which reveals :

SMART check : not installed

Short DST : not installed

Please help. I have so much work on my laptop.

Hi,

Hard drive has probably failed due to fall.

There are 2 main methods you can try to salvage data from failed drive:
1) Create LiveCD from another computer. Boot from this disc in your laptop, then copy the files from failed HDD to another external hard drive connected to notebook.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

2) Take out the failed hard drive out. Connect it to another computer using SATA to USB adapter. Use Windows explorer to copy the files you need from HDD to another external hard drive.

For the error you're getting, you can try to do a hard reset, reseat hard drive and check.

Mostly you've to buy new hard drive of similar form factor

Use recovery media to factory reset after replacement of HDD or you can clean install Windows 8.1 in your laptop if it came with Windows 8/8.1 from factory.

Forgive me but I don't know anything about computers but will buying a new hard drive make my computer work again?

Hi,

That depends on what all hardware components failed due to the fall.

Please do extensive system testing from BIOS/UEFI by tapping F2 or ESC key as soon as you power on laptop, from System Diagnostics.

It'll take many many hours to finish. Be patient.

Hard drive has failed

You've to replace hard drive with a new one of similar form factor

If your laptop came with Windows 8/8.1 from factory, then use Windows 8.1 installation USB to clean install Windows into new HDD

Create BOOTABLE Windows 8.1 installation USB using Microsoft windows media creation tool:
https://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html

Windows will be automatically activated after installation while connected to internet
