I’m having a lot of trouble getting my Elgato HD60 S to work with my Lenovo Legion laptop. I’m using the original Elgato USB cable that came with the device, along with HDMI in from my Nintendo Switch and HDMI out to my TV. The gameplay shows up fine on the TV through passthrough, but on my laptop I keep getting the error message in Elgato 4K Capture Utility: “USB communication issue detected. Please re-connect Game Capture HD60 S to a USB 3.0 port.”

I’ve tried every single USB port on my laptop (all marked SS), reinstalled the Elgato software and drivers multiple times, and even wiped the drivers completely before reinstalling. In Device Manager, the HD60 S shows up under Sound, video and game controllers, but the Events tab says “Device settings not migrated due to partial or ambiguous device match.” OBS also doesn’t show a feed from the device — just a black screen.

At this point, I’ve ruled out the HDMI, the cable, and the ports, since everything else works fine with them. I’m stuck on why the HD60 S won’t communicate properly with my laptop even though it’s being detected. Has anyone else run into this with a Lenovo Legion or know how to resolve the USB communication issue?

Hi @Dudert

I understand this isn’t directly related to HP products, but since you’ve asked here, we’ll still try to help with some general troubleshooting. The Elgato HD60 S can sometimes be finicky with certain laptops like the Lenovo Legion, and the “USB communication issue” you’re seeing often comes down to either a driver/firmware mismatch or a USB controller conflict.

Here are some steps worth trying:

1. USB Port / Controller Check

  • Even though all your ports are marked SS (USB 3.0), some laptops split bandwidth between controllers. Try both left- and right-side ports, and avoid hubs/extenders.

  • In Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right-click each USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)PropertiesPower Management tab, and uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”

2. Power Management Settings

  • In Control Panel → Power Options → Advanced Settings, disable USB selective suspend.

  • Restart your laptop after applying the change.

3. Drivers & Firmware

  • Install the latest Elgato Game Capture software and make sure firmware updates have been applied.

  • If you see the “Device settings not migrated” message in Device Manager, uninstall the HD60 S completely (tick Delete the driver software), reboot, and reinstall from scratch.

4. Cable Test

  • The original cable should work, but Elgato devices are very picky. If you have another certified USB 3.0 Type-C to Type-A cable, it’s worth testing.

5. Software Conflicts

  • Try both the Elgato 4K Capture Utility and OBS Studio. If neither works, it’s more likely a USB/driver issue. If OBS works but Elgato software doesn’t, that points to a software conflict.

6. BIOS & Chipset Updates

  • On Lenovo’s support page, check for BIOS or chipset driver updates. These often include USB controller fixes that resolve device migration errors.

If none of these help, try the HD60 S on a different PC to confirm whether the problem follows the capture card or stays with the laptop. That can quickly rule out a hardware fault.

👉 While this isn’t an HP issue, we hope these steps help you narrow down what’s going on with your Elgato HD60 S.
