Hi @Burdo1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your HP Laptop - 15 is experiencing a "black screen" issue after a Windows update. Here's how to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

Check for Display Output Issues:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI or VGA cable.
  • If the external display works, it could indicate an issue with your laptop's screen or display drivers.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Shut down your laptop by holding the power button for 10-15 seconds.
  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.), unplug the charger, and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery and charger, and power it on.

Boot Into Safe Mode:

  • Power off the laptop, then press the power button to turn it on.
  • As soon as it starts, press the F8 or Shift + F8 key repeatedly to enter Safe Mode.
    • If this doesn't work, try interrupting the boot process by powering off the device three times during startup.
  • In Safe Mode:
    • Uninstall any recent updates by navigating to:
      • Settings > Update & Security > View update history > Uninstall updates.
    • Update your display drivers:
      • Right-click the Start menu, select Device Manager, expand Display Adapters, and update the driver.

Perform a System Restore:

  • Boot the laptop using Windows Recovery:
    • Turn it off and back on, pressing F11 repeatedly during startup.
  • Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore.
  • Choose a restore point from before the update to revert changes.

Reset the Laptop (Last Resort):

  • If the above steps don't work, perform a reset:
    • Go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC in the recovery menu.
    • Choose either Keep my files or Remove everything based on your needs.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
