Microsoft Windows 11

Windows Version and Build: Windows 11, 24H2, 26100.6584

I have been getting this error: The Secure Boot update failed to update a Secure Boot variable with error Unknown HResult Error code: 0x800700c1. TPM-WMI, Event ID: 1796

Usually just preceding Windows freezing and I have to hard reboot the machine.

I have disabled, and reenabled Secure Boot, with reset to default keys. And have done a repair installation of Windows. The halting occurs randomly, sometimes when watching a video, logging into a password manager, or when taking a screenshot.

I have made sure all drives are up to date, and BIOS firmware are current. Prior to repair installation, the TPM-WMI errors went back as far as 7/9/25, with none prior. I was not able to uninstall the updates, due to System Restore being disabled (unbeknownst to me).

The system will also randomly lock and reboot, with one of these errors in the event viewer:

  • [Bugcheck, Event ID 101] The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000113 (0x0000000000000010, 0xffffdd09833c0b50, 0x0000000000000009, 0x0000000000000002).
  • [HAL, Event ID 15] The IOMMU has detected an error.

    Device: 0x100
    FaultInformation: 0xFEDC7EE0
    FaultReason: 0x6
    ExtendedData: 0x0

The freezing has been occuring over the last 2 weeks.

@jgcblaine, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Based on the details you've shared including TPM-WMI Event ID 1796, Bugcheck 0x00000113, and IOMMU HAL Event ID 15, this appears to be a low-level system issue potentially tied to Secure Boot, TPM, or firmware interactions with Windows 11 24H2.

Here are targeted steps to help resolve the freezing and rebooting issues:

Perform a Hard Reset

This clears temporary memory and forces a full hardware scan.

  • Disconnect all peripherals (except keyboard/mouse).
  • Unplug the AC adapter.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect power and boot the system.

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

Check for hardware faults that may be triggering bugchecks.

Update BIOS and Drivers via HP Support Assistant

Even if you’ve updated manually, HP Support Assistant may detect additional firmware or driver updates.

Check for Windows Optional Updates

Sometimes firmware-related fixes are pushed via Windows Update.

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options > Optional Updates
  • Install all available updates, especially related to Security, TPM, or BIOS extensions

Reset Secure Boot & TPM

Since the TPM-WMI error involves Secure Boot variables, try this:

  • Enter BIOS (press Esc or F10 at boot)
  • Disable Secure Boot → Save & Exit → Boot to Windows
  • Reboot into BIOS → Enable Secure Boot → Reset to Default Keys
  • Save & Exit

Also, in Windows:

  • Open TPM.msc → Check TPM status
  • If available, click Clear TPM (only if BitLocker is not enabled)

Check for Known Issues with Windows 11 24H2

Windows Insider or early 24H2 builds may have bugs with Secure Boot or IOMMU. Consider rolling back to Windows 11 23H2 if the issue persists and no hardware faults are found.

Additional Notes

  • The Bugcheck 0x113 (VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR) may indicate a graphics driver or firmware issue. Consider using Studio drivers from NVIDIA if applicable.
  • The IOMMU HAL Event ID 15 suggests a low-level memory mapping fault. This could be BIOS-related or caused by virtualization settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
