I have tried numerous times to complete this update and I keep getting the message "We couldn't install the update but you can try again ()x80248007".   I tried restoring to factory settings and it still gives the same message.  Microsoft said the processor Intel Celeron N4020 CPU @ 1.10GHz is not on the approved Windows 11 list.  How can that be the case if the laptop came preloaded with it?  It never had Windows 10.  Should I ignore the update and keep using it?  Any other options?  I understand the laptop is out of warranty (a few years old) but how can Win 11 have been installed with an unapproved processor?

I guess the person at Microsoft ought to take another look at the list of W11-supported processors they released which clearly shows the Intel Celeron N4020 is on that list, so that isn't the problem.

I have two suggestions for you:

1. If you have not done so already, try the in-place upgrade method using the W11 Update Assistant button at the link below (1st option).

Download Windows 11

2. If the above method doesn't work, back up any files you need to save onto a portable hard drive and use the Media creation tool (2nd option) at the link above to create a bootable W11 installation flash drive to clean install W11 24H2 on your notebook.

After W11 has completed installing you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.

W11 23H2 goes out of support this October.

It is best to always update to the next build of W11 because each build is only supported for two years with security and cumulative updates.

Thank you Paul.  Not sure why Microsoft gave me that information but it's been awhile.  Just trying to see what I can get to work before giving up.  I think we have already tried your first suggestion several times and we get the same error message.  I have completed the installation on the bootable flash drive but the instructions on how to get it to boot from the drive are a bit confusing.  I tried a shutdown and restart but that does not work.  If you can share any advice on how to use the flash drive it would be helpful.

You're very welcome.

Have the W11 USB installation flash drive in the PC's USB port.

Turn on or restart the PC.

Immediately tap, tap, tap the ESC key to get the menu of options.

Select the F9 boot options menu and from that, select the W11 USB flash drive and press the Enter key.

The PC should boot from the flash drive and the W11 setup files should begin to load.

So I was able to boot from the flash drive and the installation gets to the point where I am on a screen "select a location to install windows 11".  Several choices of disks and partitions but only one is available and its labelled Disk 0 Partition 3: Windows.  All other disks and partition show not available.  I chose the Windows partition and the install continues until I get a pop up that says "installation failed"  with no reason.  Do I need to change something in these partitions?  Delete?

HP Recommended

What I would do is to delete every partition on the Disk 0 drive, leaving just one partition of unallocated space.

Click next, and Windows should set up and create the partitions it needs to install.

The installation was completed and everything seems to be up to date.  Your instructions were perfect and I could not have done it out without them.  Finally done after several months of searching for a solution.  Thanks!

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.

Hopefully, the W11 25H2 update that should be available in October will go without a problem so you can avoid having to clean install Windows again.
