The fingerprint sensor is an option on the series.

What is your model name / product number?

Finding your Product Name, Product Number, or Serial Number

Please do NOT post the serial number or any private information – we are a public resource.

Has the device ever worked in the past?

IF Yes:

If yes, when was the last time it worked?

Has anything changed?  Windows Updates?  PIN issues with your account?  Anything else that you are aware?

Which version of Windows 10 are you running?

Which version of Windows operating system am I running?

What else?

Generate a report and examine it for installed hardware.

Hardware Information software - free

  https://www.hwinfo.com/download/

NOTE

When saving the report, you may opt to change the location and file name.

Example - Default location and filename:

C:\Program Files\HWiNFO64\<ComputerName>.HTM

Open the html report and search for the device in the Ports section.

Example of a fingerprint sensor in a Zbook 17 G3:

[Port8] : DigitalPersona Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=003f)

If you find the information, report (post) the results (port number and information following the port)

OK.

In general,

Without the Device Manager being able to detect the device, for all intents and purposes, the device does not exist.

What can cause this?

Changes in the OS rarely cause catastrophic device detection loss, but it might happen.

Changes to the BIOS can cause an upset in the Windows system.

Very rarely, the actual fingerprint hardware can fail - emphasis on rare.

What else?

Fingerprint Sensor / Forced Reset

If the fingerprint sensor suddenly stops working on your computer

OR

If the computer is not issuing errors but still won’t let you log in,

Consider trying a Forced Reset (power reset).

Reminders

A Forced Reset is NOT a “recovery” and does not remove your data – this reset merely forces the computer to load the Operating System from disk.

Forced Reset does not harm a healthy system nor does it “fix” problems not related to a clean start.

HP Video Gallery

  • Open Category Computing and Mobile Devices
  • Search for “forced reset
