@JKAGB, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The Caps Lock blinking pattern you're seeing, 5 slow blinks followed by 3 fast blinks, is a diagnostic code from your HP notebook indicating a hardware failure. Specifically:

  • 5 slow blinks typically point to a CPU failure.
  • 3 fast blinks may indicate a BIOS corruption or motherboard issue.

This pattern means the system is unable to complete POST (Power-On Self-Test), which is why it won’t power on.

Recommended Steps to Troubleshoot:

Perform a Hard Reset

This helps clear residual power and may resolve temporary hardware lockups.

  • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect only the AC adapter (leave battery out if removable).
  • Try powering on the notebook.

Check for BIOS Recovery

Some HP notebooks support BIOS recovery using a key combination.

  • Turn off the notebook.
  • Press and hold Windows key + B, then press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release the power button but continue holding Windows + B for another 10 seconds.
  • If supported, the BIOS recovery screen should appear.

Inspect for Physical Damage or Overheating

If the notebook was dropped or exposed to heat, internal components may be affected. Let it cool down and try again.

If the issue persists, the notebook likely needs service. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
