Hi @j377yb3an,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your Chromebook 14 says it’s up to date, but also asks you to update Chrome to sync. Let’s go through some steps to figure out what’s causing this.

    a. Check Chromebook Auto-Update Support
Go to Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details.
Check the “Auto Update Expiration (AUE)” date. If your device has passed its AUE (common for models from 2019), it will no longer receive ChromeOS updates, even if it says "up to date".

    b. Confirm Current ChromeOS Version
Go to Settings > About ChromeOS and note the version installed.
Compare it with the latest version available for Chromebooks online to see if it's outdated.

    c. Restart Device Properly
Click the time at the bottom right > Power off instead of just closing the lid.
Wait 30 seconds and turn it back on to clear temporary update errors.

    d. Check Storage Space
Ensure there is at least 2–3 GB of free space, as low storage can prevent updates.
Delete unwanted files or move them to Google Drive if needed.

    e. Remove and Re-add Google Account (Sync Issue)
Go to Settings > Accounts > Google Accounts.
Remove your account, restart the Chromebook, and add it back to re-enable sync.

    f. Try Powerwash (Factory Reset)
Before doing this, back up your files to Google Drive or USB.
Go to Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash.
After reset, connect to Wi-Fi and check for updates again.

    g. If Auto Update Expiration (AUE) Has Passed
If your Chromebook is past its AUE date, it can’t receive new ChromeOS versions, which is why sync asks for an update.
In that case, you can continue using it offline, install Chrome Flex OS, or switch to Linux/Developer Mode to keep it functional.

I hope this helps.
