Hi @anne1958,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how disruptive it is to have your HP laptop suddenly show a blue screen (BSOD) and restart, especially when you're just stepping away for a moment. The fact that Chrome reports it didn’t shut down properly confirms that the system crashed unexpectedly.

Let’s walk through the most likely causes and how to fix them:

1. Driver Conflicts or Corruption

  • A recent update or incompatible driver (especially graphics or storage) can cause BSODs.
  • Use Device Manager to check for any yellow warning icons.

2. Power or Sleep State Issues

  • If the crash happens when the laptop goes idle or enters sleep mode, it could be a power management bug.
  • Try disabling Fast Startup and adjusting sleep settings:
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
    • Uncheck Turn on fast startup.

3. Chrome or GPU-Related Crashes

  • Chrome uses hardware acceleration, which can trigger GPU-related BSODs.
  • Try disabling it:
    • Open Chrome > Settings > System > Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.

4. Memory or Storage Errors

  • Faulty RAM or SSD issues can cause intermittent crashes.
  • Run Windows Memory Diagnostic and CHKDSK:
    • Press Windows + R, type mdsched.exe, and restart.
    • Open Command Prompt as admin and run: chkdsk /f /r

5. View the Error Code

Even though the screen flashes quickly, Windows logs the error:

  • Go to Settings > System > About > Advanced system settings > Startup and Recovery.
  • Uncheck Automatically restart under System failure.
  • Next time it crashes, you’ll see the error code (e.g., IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE, etc.).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
