Hi @bobthebulker,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eg0028sa starts up normally but then randomly shuts down or restarts soon after startup, without overheating or showing any warning messages. Since you can’t reach the desktop long enough to use recovery tools or updates, let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this issue and how to stabilize your system.

Perform a Hard Reset

Turn off the laptop completely.

Unplug the power adapter and disconnect all external devices (USB drives, mouse, etc.).

Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds to drain residual power.

Reconnect only the power adapter and try turning it on again.

This clears temporary hardware and power management issues that can cause restarts.

Boot into Safe Mode

Turn the laptop on and immediately press F11 repeatedly until you see Choose an Option.

Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart, then press 4 or F4 to boot into Safe Mode.

If the system stays stable in Safe Mode, the issue is likely software-related (driver or Windows corruption).

Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure

While in Safe Mode, press Windows + R, type sysdm.cpl, and go to Advanced → Startup and Recovery (Settings).

Uncheck Automatically restart, then click OK.

This ensures Windows will show an error message (Blue Screen) instead of restarting, helping identify the cause.

Check for Corrupted System Files

Still in Safe Mode, open Command Prompt (Admin) and type:

sfc /scannow

After completion, type:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

These commands repair corrupted Windows files that can cause startup instability.

I hope this helps.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍
