This query was diverted from a closed thread circa 2017.
My HP Pavilion has stopped charging when running but charges OK when on sleep or switched off. The recommended action is to delete "Microsoft ACPI compliant control method battery" and/or "Microsft AC adapter" in device manager.
Since doing this the OS reports "incompatible power source detected, use the original adapter". It is the original adapter and still won't charge normally.

Hi @gamerfred,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
It sounds like you've already taken some steps to troubleshoot the charging issue on your HP Pavilion Laptop - G66PN92O. The error message "incompatible power source detected" suggests that there might be an issue with the power adapter or the battery drivers. Here are some steps you can take to further troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
Steps to Troubleshoot Charging Issue
Reinstall Battery and Power Adapter Drivers:
- Go to the Device Manager.
- Right-click on "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" and "Microsoft AC Adapter" and select "Uninstall device" for both.
- After uninstalling, restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall these drivers.
Update BIOS:
- Sometimes updating the BIOS can resolve power management issues.
- Visit the HP support website, enter your laptop model (G66PN92O), and download the latest BIOS update.
- Follow the instructions provided by HP to update the BIOS.
Check Power Adapter:
- Ensure that you are using the original power adapter that came with your laptop. Using a third-party or incorrect adapter can cause charging issues.
- Inspect the power adapter and cable for any visible damage. If you have access to another compatible HP power adapter, try using it to see if the issue persists.
Perform a Power Reset:
- Turn off your laptop and unplug the power adapter.
- Remove the battery if it is removable.
- Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
- Reinsert the battery, plug in the power adapter, and turn on the laptop.
Battery Health Check:
- Use the HP Support Assistant to check the health of your battery.
- Open the HP Support Assistant, go to "Battery and Performance" or similar option, and run a battery check.
Reset Power Plan Settings:
- Sometimes custom power plan settings can cause charging issues.
- Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings.
- Click on "Change plan settings" next to your selected plan, then "Restore default settings for this plan."
Hardware Diagnostics:
- Run the built-in HP hardware diagnostics tool to check for any hardware issues.
- Restart your laptop and repeatedly press the Esc key until the Startup Menu appears.
- Press F2 to open the System Diagnostics menu.
- Run the battery test and any other relevant diagnostics.
Additional Considerations
- Battery Replacement: If your battery is old or failing, it may need to be replaced. Batteries typically degrade over time and lose their ability to hold a charge.
- HP Support: If the issue persists after trying all these steps, consider reaching out to HP Phone Support for further assistance.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
