Hp laptop

Saw a message about operating system support, clicked on "remind me later' - Tried to login same day, and this message started looping "preparing automatic repair"

Please help, I am working on my son's laptop, sentimental to me as he has passed on, and I miss him so much  ❤️‍🩹

Hi @Dee_Hazel,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing something so deeply personal. I’m truly sorry for your loss, and I can understand how much this laptop means to you. Let’s work together and do everything we can to bring it back to life.

Fixing the “Preparing Automatic Repair” Loop

This issue usually means Windows is unable to boot properly due to:

  • Corrupted system files
  • Missing or damaged operating system
  • Failed update or driver conflict

Let’s try the safest recovery steps first:

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Power off the laptop completely.
  2. Disconnect the charger and any USB devices.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the charger and try powering it on.

Step 2: Access Recovery Options

If the loop continues:

  1. Turn on the laptop and immediately press Esc repeatedly, then press F11.
  2. This should open HP Recovery Manager or Windows Recovery Environment.
  3. Choose:
    • Startup Repair (first option)
    • If that fails, try System Restore (if restore points exist)

Step 3: Check for Operating System

If you suspect the OS is missing:

  • Boot into BIOS:
Turn on the laptop and press Esc, then F10.
  • Check if the internal drive is detected under “Storage” or “Boot Options”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. Unfortunately I have a blue Stop screen. I think I missed an update for Windows 10 support expiring and not sure if I can resolve this easily, an update or Windows support or purchase?

Thank you, Dee
