A loud hum starts to come from my machine, and after a while stops. What can be the issue? When the only application in use was closed the hum stopped but this was checked only once. Then and now the hum starts, and becomes loud and loud and stops after a while, then again starts and repeats the same aforementioned steps.

What can be the cause?

(1) Update BIOS

(2) Reboot and test again ...

How old is the laptop?   Is the sound like an electric hum, or a fan?   Does the hum disappear when you disconnect the power cable?

My guess is the cooling fan has become dirty, and the noise is caused by dust/dirt/pet hair/etc. buildup.

Be advised:  Running a BIOS update has some extreme risks if not necessary...

I do not agree here.

Updating the BIOS is recommended as standard maintenance of the computer. It can also help resolve the following issues:

  • An available BIOS update resolves a specific issue or improves computer performance.

  • The current BIOS does not support a hardware component or a Windows upgrade.

  • HP Support recommends installing a specific BIOS update.
