HP Support Assistant is suggesting I install the BIOS Update SP77795. When i do it it stays at the "HP Notebook System BIOS Update" stage for a long time and shows no progress in the gray status bar.
I finally stopped it after about an hour.

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out :)
As I understand the BIOS Update is taking a long time,
Don't worry I'll help you out, please attempt the below steps:
The issue occurs if the process is interrupted and the slightest move or a touch of the keyboard at times makes drastic changes,
Start with a hard reset to release any excessive static on the PC:
- If Windows is open, click Start and then Shutdown.
- If Windows is not open and the computer has power, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.
- With the power off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer.
- With the power off and the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.
Attempt to reset or recover the existing BIOS (if the recent update was interrupted):

Step 1: Verify the current BIOS version installed and the correct ROM Family SSID for your PC
Step 2: Find the BIOS updates
Step 3: Download and install the BIOS update

I have similar problem with bios patch sp77795 on 640G1 laptop running windows 10 education.
When I ran the patch, agreed with the a number of questions, normally it extracted the content to the folder \swsetup\sp77795 (or whatever patch your are applying) but it didn't happen. And obviously the next step of updating the BIOS cannot continue.
I suspect either (1) I don't have enough admin privilege; or (2) UEFI stops me; or (3) something wrong with patch script.
I have no problem with BIOS update for 840G3, 820G3, 800G2 and G1, and 8300.
Any feedback is appreciated.

I found the folder and resolved the problem.
After it extracts the file content, and answered the questions, it launched HP BIOS Update and Recovery HPBIOSUPDREC64.exe but this particular window is hidden behind whatever the window in front. You hear a bing and won't see the window. You have to refresh the screen or open something else and close it to force the Update window to appear. Then it proceeds on without any problem.
