Battery not fully charging, and laptop shutting down with no warning

HP Pavilion Notebook15-ab120ca
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello. I have an HP pavillion notebook 15-ab120ca, which I've had for just over a year.

in the last couple days I'd noticed that my laptop seemed to be shutting down without any warning, and when the battery wasn't completely drained, at around 30%.

Yesterday I noticed that my battery was charging to around 93-94% and then would say "plugged in, not charging", if I unplugged the ac cable and reattached sometimes the number would jump around to 89, 100, 95 %, but would be not charging. When running on battery power, it lasts less than a couple hours.

After trying a few different troubleshooting methods, earlier today the battery got to 17% before shutting down with no warning. However, it dropped within minutes from 33% to 25% to 17% before that.

I have run a battery check and it says that the battery is ok. If there something I can do to fix this problem?

Thank you.

Battery not fully charging, and laptop shutting down with no warning

Hi,

What is HP battery test results - cycle count, cell voltages?

What all troubleshooting steps you did?

Bad battery can be a situation here.

Have you tried manual calibration of battery -

Please uninstall Microsoft ACPI compliant control driver from device manager, restart system.

BATTERY 1
NAME
Primary
MANUFACTURER
Hewlett-Packard
SERIAL NUMBER
-
CHEMISTRY
LION
DESIGN CAPACITY
25,696 mWh

FULL CHARGE CAPACITY
25,696 mWh
CYCLE COUNT
231

i've tried manually calibrating, but not sure it worked because the battery won't charge to 100% .

I also tried uninstalling the ACPI compliant control driver, but that didn't help.

What are the individual cell voltages reported after the test?

Is there unusually warm air through the vents?

Is there overheating issue since you bought this laptop?

Can you try to update the BIOS to latest version, if not already done: please read this document carefully before Update -

Where in the report does it list the individual cell voltages?

I did a general energy before the battery test, and the cycle count was lower on the battery test.

I updated the BIOS, it no longer says not charging, but still wouldn't charge past 92%. It is still shutting down without warning after the battery % drops quickly once it gets close to 30%. Earlier the warning came up at 11% but the laptop shut off about one second later.

Battery not fully charging, and laptop shutting down with no warning

Hi,

Regarding battery cycle count , almost 2/3rd of its total battery capacity is over with a year itself. For what all purposes do you use this machine?

Is there overheating, working at higher temperatures?

http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00596784

This may be the reason of not holding charge properly.

Cell voltages are okay, so they are still in working condition.

You could try reloading BIOS to defaults:
http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00034791

Again try to calibrate battery manually.

I use this machine for all my schooling, as well as for tv and dvds.

I have tried reloading BIOS defaults and so far it doesn't seem to have made a difference.

i just ran the battery check again and it now says that the battery is weak.

Replacing it with new one preferably HP genuine battery part is the solution.

If you need help with this, do let me know.
