Hi @tuskin40,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.
Does the keyboard behave this way in all apps (Word, browser, Notepad), or only in certain programs?
Is your Windows language/keyboard layout set to English (US/UK), or is it using another regional layout?
Have you tried connecting an external USB keyboard to see if the issue persists?
Here are a few troubleshooting steps worth trying:
- Check keyboard layout settings: Go to Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Keyboard layout. Make sure it’s set to the layout you expect (e.g., English US). Sometimes laptops ship with alternate layouts enabled by default.
- Add/remove layouts: If multiple layouts are installed, remove the ones you don’t use. Windows may be switching between them.
- Test with On‑Screen Keyboard: Press Win + Ctrl + O to open the on‑screen keyboard. See if the “greater than” sign works there this helps confirm if it’s hardware or layout related.
- Update drivers/firmware: Use HP Support Assistant to check for keyboard driver or BIOS updates. Sometimes firmware updates fix key mapping issues.
- External keyboard test: Plug in a USB keyboard. If the external one works fine, the issue is likely with the built‑in keyboard mapping.
- Shortcut check: On some HP laptops, the “greater than” sign may require Shift + . (period) depending on the layout. Try that combination to see if it works.
When you look at your Windows keyboard layout settings, does it show “English (India)” or another regional variant instead of “English (US/UK)”? That detail will help confirm if this is a layout mismatch rather than a hardware flaw
I hope this helps.
I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster!

1. It does the same with all apps
2. The keyboard of the laptop is a Swiss keyboard. Regional layout set to Swiss
3. why would i want to use an external keyboard when i bought a bloody laptop?
4. The issue is with hard laptop keyboard, why would i want to use the bloody on screen keyboard? Then i might as well use the mouse to click the buttons using a mouse.
everything is up to date, drivers bios.
The issue here is the assignment of the keys. The lack of consistency of the layout and key combinations. Why force 4 keys in one key? AltGR + L should = "\" . That should be corrected from HP side!

Hi @tuskin40,
I genuinely appreciate your patience, and thank you again for clearly explaining the concern.
The only reason we recommend testing with an external keyboard or the on-screen keyboard is not to suggest that these are long-term solutions, but simply to help isolate the root cause of the problem. These tests allow us to determine whether the issue is:
Hardware-related (a fault with the physical key matrix on the laptop keyboard), or
Software/layout-related (Windows interpreting the key combinations incorrectly), or
Firmware-related (keyboard controller mapping on the device itself)
.
If the external or on-screen keyboard produces the correct “\” character with the same Swiss layout selected, then it confirms that the operating system and layout settings are functioning correctly and that the built-in keyboard hardware is likely mis-mapping the keys. This helps us to identify the case more accurately as a hardware or firmware mapping issue.
On the other hand, if the same incorrect character appears even on the on-screen keyboard, it points to a system-level layout conflict rather than a hardware fault.
Kindly please update us on the above request.
Regards
Deep_World

It has to do with the laptop keyboard. Other keyboards (external and Onscreen) has a different key, or uses "AltGr" + "<" to get "\" . Whereas with this stupid designed keyboard you need to press "AltGr" + "Fn" + "L" to get "\". Instead of just "AltGr" + "L" to get "\".
