HP Rechargeable MPP2.0 Tilt Pen
Microsoft Windows 11

This is a post to serve people who may find themselves in the same situation I found myself this week, where I just could not get my HP Rechargeable MPP2.0 Tilt Pen to work with my HP Spectre X360 laptop. (I entered the serial number on this HP webpage but it did not accept it, so I selected the option to add a product name by clicking on "Select a product I do not own.")

I was struggling to connect the new pen with the laptop, as my initial Googling and the HP consultant I spoke to on the phone said it needed to be paired via Bluetooth with the laptop. This does not appear in the product documentation that comes with the pen.

THIS PEN DOES NOT CONNECT VIA BLUETOOTH!

It connects with the laptop through the MPP2.0 screen technology. That in itself is amazing!

I found a post on Reddit that pointed me in the right direction. Tonight I charged the pen until the ring light was white, then found out it just works on MS Word, OneNote, without needing to pair it.

To change the button functions, you use the HP Pen Control Plus app that is preinstalled on the laptop. I changed the pen button functions by changing it on the app, applying the change, then it syncs with the pen when you hold it a few millimetres away from the screen and a dot appears on the screen. When you then push the button, it performs the new action. I tested it with the Volume Up and Volume Down functions.

I am available to be contacted by whomever in HP reads this, as you'd no doubt want to confirm this.

Hi @Abriedev

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing your experience so clearly. I can imagine how confusing it must have been when you were first told to pair the pen via Bluetooth, only to discover that it works in a completely different way.

You’ve already done excellent troubleshooting by charging the pen fully and testing it in Word and OneNote.

To help others who may face the same situation, here are the key points and steps to keep in mind with the HP Rechargeable MPP2.0 Tilt Pen:

Connection Method

  • The pen does not use Bluetooth.
  • It connects directly through Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP 2.0) technology built into the HP Spectre x360’s touchscreen.
  • Once charged, simply hover the pen a few millimetres above the screen until the dot appears, then start writing or using functions.

Charging and Readiness

  • Charge the pen until the LED ring turns solid white.
  • A fully charged pen will immediately work with compatible apps like MS Word, OneNote, and drawing programs.

Customizing Buttons

  • Use the HP Pen Control Plus app preinstalled on your laptop to change button functions.
  • After applying changes in the app, hold the pen close to the screen so it syncs.
  • Test the new functions by pressing the buttons once the dot appears.

Driver and App Updates

  • Ensure your system is up to date with Windows 11 updates.
  • You can also check HP’s support page for the latest pen software:
    HP Pen Control Software

Practical Tip

  • If the pen doesn’t respond, disconnect and reconnect it by hovering near the screen again.
  • Avoid trying to add it in Bluetooth settings, as it will never appear there.

Your discovery highlights the simplicity and elegance of MPP technology—it just works once the pen is charged and near the screen.
