HP Spectre x360 Fan Noise

HP Spectre x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I purchased a brand new HP Spectre x360. All along the fan was silent and could not be heard. I installed Google Drive onto my machine, and the fan started to make a very loud sound. I tried to restart the machine in hopes that the sound would go away, however, the computer was just stuck on the restart screen for approximately 30 minutes. I then held the power button and forced a shut down. The computer then started up again. However, the fan buzzing can still be heard albeit not as loud as it was before I restarted the machine. The fan does get louder and eventually goes back to normal.

I can now here the fan buzzing which was not happening on the first few days that I was using the laptop. Is this normal, bearing in mind the only thing installed on my laptop is Microsoft Onedrive.

HP Spectre x360 Fan Noise

Good Day,

Thank you for your reply.

Please advise which firmware you are relating to on the link?

Please note that I have already updated the BIOS drivers.

I have changed the cooling policy for both battery and charging from Active to Passive. Are these settings compatible with this laptop or will it cause the laptop to overheat?

Thanks,

Uzayr

@UzayrA

Thanks for the reply.

It looks like you were interacting with @KrazyToad, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out.

I'm Raj1788 & I'm at your service.

Use the following steps to open the System Tests menu when Windows won't start.

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

  3. On the main menu, click System Tests.

  4. The System Tests menu displays.

Run the Extensive Test

The Extensive Test checks your system to make sure that the main components are functioning properly. It provides a more comprehensive test than the Quick Test. These tests run consecutively through the listed components, and can take 2 or more hours to complete.

The following tests are performed:

  • Battery check

  • Processor check

  • System board check

  • Hard drive SMART check

  • Hard drive short DST check

  • Hard drive optimized DST check

  • Hard drive long DST check

  • Memory extensive check

  • Video memory check

You cannot use your computer during the test. The Extensive Test takes 2 or more hours to complete, depending on the system configuration. You can cancel at any time by pressing the Escape key (Esc).

Use the following steps to run the Extensive Test.

  1. From the main menu, click System Tests, then click Extensive Test.

  2. Click Run once, or Loop until error.

    While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component are shown on the screen. The test can take 2 or more hours to complete.

  3. If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) so you have it available when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in Test Logs on the main menu.

Keep me posted How it goes!

Have a great day!

Thank you.

@UzayrA

You mentioned that the issue started after you installed Google Drive.

You can attempt a System Restore to an earlier time before the issue started

- Select the Start button, type control panel and then choose it from the list of results.
- Search Control Panel for Recovery.
- Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.
- Choose the restore point prior to the start of the issue and then select Next > Finish.

If the issue persists, please follow the instruction suggested by @Raj1788 for Service Options

Thank you 😊

My question is that I have now switched cooling policy from Active to Passive on both battery and charging. Is this setting adequate or will it cause the laptop to overheat?

@UzayrA

If the Notebook is not overheating, then you can leave the cooling policy as Passive
