Microsoft Windows 11

I've reinstalled the windows on my laptop, but since then the num lock's on-screen indicator has not been working.

I've installed the latest HP Event Utility System and HP Support Assistant, but still no luck. There are no driver updates in the Support Assistant.

I'd appreciate any help regarding this issue.

Thanks.

Hi @pluto_laserr,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

It must be frustrating to lose the on-screen indicator for the num lock, especially after taking steps to update and reinstall the necessary utilities. Let’s work on getting that indicator back for you.

  • Before reinstalling Windows, was the num lock indicator working correctly?
  • Have you noticed if any other on-screen indicators (like caps lock) are also missing, or is it only the num lock indicator?
  • Is the num lock functionality itself working, even if the indicator isn’t showing?

Check Windows Ease of Access Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
  • Look for an option related to “On-screen keyboard” or “Toggle keys” (which plays a sound for key presses). Enabling or adjusting these settings can sometimes restore on-screen indicators.

Enable Visual Notifications for Num Lock Key:

  • Press Win + R, type control to open the Control Panel, and go to Ease of Access Center.
  • Select Make the keyboard easier to use.
  • Ensure the Turn on Toggle Keys option is selected to test if audio feedback works for the Num Lock key.

Check if HP OSD Utility Is Installed:

  • Verify if HP On-Screen Display Utility (OSD) is installed on your system. This utility manages on-screen notifications for HP devices.
  • If it’s not installed, try downloading it from HP’s support page for your model, as it can restore the on-screen indicator.

Adjust Registry Settings for Indicators (Only if Comfortable Editing the Registry):

  • Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard.
  • Look for a value named InitialKeyboardIndicators and set it to 2 (this might help restore the indicator).
  • Restart the laptop and check if the indicator appears.

Perform a Clean Boot to Rule Out Conflicting Software:

  • Press Win + R, type msconfig, and go to the Services tab.
  • Check Hide all Microsoft services and then click Disable all.
  • Go to the Startup tab in Task Manager and disable all startup items, then restart your laptop.
  • This will help determine if any third-party applications are interfering with the on-screen indicators. If the issue resolves in clean boot mode, re-enable services one at a time to identify the culprit.

If these steps don’t restore the indicator, there may be a compatibility issue between the current Windows version and HP’s utility software. Let me know how it goes or if you need further assistance!

Hello,

Thank you for your detailed answer and for providing various solutions.

I've tried all of this, however, there are still no on-screen indicators...

I've installed the event system utility but had no luck with it.

The only update I've got is for speakers:

I'm not sure what else I should do. The only thing I don't have is the Omen software.
