How do I reset the language on my HP pavilion from the lock screen if I don't have a pen just log in

Hi @TroubleSome_

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how inconvenient it feels when the language on your HP Pavilion is incorrect at the lock screen and you just want to get back in without extra accessories.

Let’s carefully walk through what you can do.

  • At the Windows lock screen, the language shown is usually tied to the keyboard input method rather than the display language.
  • You don’t need a pen or touchscreen to change it—you can do it with the keyboard.
  • Once you log in, you can reset the system language permanently in Windows settings.

What you can do at the lock screen

Keyboard shortcut to switch input language

  • On the lock screen, press Windows key + Spacebar or Alt + Shift.
  • This cycles through the installed keyboard layouts/languages.
  • Keep pressing until the correct one appears in the bottom‑right corner of the screen.

Log in with the correct layout

  • Once the right language/keyboard layout is active, enter your password or PIN.
  • This allows you to access the desktop.

Resetting the language permanently (after login)

  1. Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region.
  2. Under Preferred languages, set the language you want as default.
  3. Remove any extra languages you don’t use.
  4. Restart the PC to apply changes across the lock screen and system.

You can review detailed instructions here:
HP PCs – Changing Languages in Windows

At the lock screen, you can switch the keyboard input language using Windows + Spacebar or Alt + Shift. After logging in, adjust the language settings in Windows so the correct language always appears.
