HP ENVY X360 - 15-ds0599na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

On November 25th I got a notification that a BIOS update was available from HP (15.17.00), and since then whenever my laptop enters sleep mode it immediately gets ridiculously hot to the touch, especially with the metal frame of the Envy, I nearly burnt myself on it when I took it out of my bag.

Not only that but the battery drains extremely fast when it heats up, I'm talking ~40% drained in 20 minutes. This has meant that i either have to enable hibernation mode or turn off my laptop entirely every time I'm not using it which is a terrible solution to a problem that shouldn't happen in the first place.

I really don't want to have to request a replacement from HP or the retailer I got it from so if there's a software update or solution to fix this I'm all ears. Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks

@DeanB75 Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are facing an overheating issue.

You will need to Understand Lithium-Ion and Smart Battery Technology: Click here for details

Resetting the ACPI battery driver may take care of this. There will be a hard reset mixed in as well, so the two methods combined typically help a lot with battery issues.

1. Go to Start, search for Device Manager, and open this result.

2. Expand batteries.

3. Right-click on the ACPI option (usually the 2nd option) and select delete or uninstall. Follow the prompts.

4. Shut down the computer.

5. Disconnect the charger.

6. Remove the battery.

7. Hold down the power button for 1 minute.

8. Insert the battery only.

9. Attempt to turn the battery on.

If this had an impact, it should behave differently.

If not, press the power button and then tap the F2 key to invoke the startup menu.

Choose and click on the F10 key to invoke the BIOS.

Use the System Configuration tab. Disable USB Charging and press the F10 key to save the changes and boot into Windows.

After performing the above steps, please update the BIOS one more time and check for the issue.

Got a 13-ar* or 15-ds* series model? Or any other model with a 3rd generation Ryzen CPU?

[edit]

I've checked your model and it has the same faulty BIOS.

Also check this thread and maybe you also want to post your experiences there:
