Hello

I’m experiencing an issue with my HP laptop. Every time I power it on, it goes directly to the Startup Menu screen and does not proceed to boot into Windows, even when I choose “Continue Boot” or other options. I’ve also noticed that the fan and mute indicator lights remain on when the computer is turned on, but the system does not make any sound at all.

Here are some additional details:

 • Pressing F2 for System Diagnostics runs tests successfully, but the system still won’t boot.

 • Pressing F10 for BIOS Setup shows the BIOS, but my internal hard drive either isn’t detected or doesn’t boot.

 • F11 for System Recovery doesn’t work or bring up recovery options.

 • The mute indicator light is always on, and I have no sound, even before this boot issue started.

I would appreciate any assistance in resolving this or advice on whether this is a hardware failure. Please let me know if further information (like the serial number or product number) is needed.

@Conteh005, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check If the Hard Drive Is Detected in BIOS

Enter BIOS Setup.

Navigate to “System Information” or “Storage” > Check if your internal hard drive (usually listed as SATA0 or M.2) is shown.

If the hard drive is NOT listed:
→ The system cannot detect it. It may have failed, become loose, or is disconnected. Skip to step 3.

If the hard drive IS listed:
→ The drive may be corrupted or not bootable. Proceed to step 2.

Boot from USB Recovery Media or Windows Installation USB

If the hard drive shows up but doesn’t boot:

On another computer, create a bootable USB with Windows Media Creation Tool:
https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10

Insert the USB into your HP laptop.

Press Esc > F9 for Boot Options > Select USB drive.

If it boots successfully into the USB:

Use "Repair your computer" to access Startup Repair.

If startup repair fails, backup files via the Command Prompt or reinstall Windows.

If this works, the issue is with the Windows installation, not hardware.

Run Full System Diagnostics

Even if quick tests passed:

Use F2 > System Tests > Extensive Test.

Pay close attention to Hard Drive and Motherboard/Memory Tests.

If the hard drive test fails, it confirms the drive is bad.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
