Hi @Marie219,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP laptop is not recognizing the password recovery disk properly, possibly due to a missing or incompatible driver. Here's how you can troubleshoot the issue.

Check the Disk Type: Make sure your password recovery disk is in the correct format. If it's a USB drive, ensure that it's properly formatted and contains the correct files for your laptop's model. Some password recovery disks may require specific software to work.

Try a Different USB Port: If you are using a USB recovery disk, try inserting it into a different USB port on your laptop. Sometimes, the laptop may not recognize the disk in a particular port.

Access BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Restart your laptop and press the Esc or F10 key to enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (depending on your HP model).
  • In the BIOS, make sure that the USB ports are enabled and set to Auto or Enabled.
  • Save the changes and restart your laptop to see if it detects the password recovery disk.

Check for Driver Issues: If the system still can't detect the recovery disk, there might be a missing or corrupted USB driver. You can try booting into Safe Mode and see if you can install or update the necessary drivers from there.

Use the Password Recovery Disk on Another PC: If possible, test the recovery disk on another PC to verify if the disk itself is working correctly.

Alternative Options:

  • If the password recovery disk is not working, and you are still locked out of your laptop, you might need to reset the password using another method, like using a Microsoft account (if applicable) to reset the password online or utilizing HP's password recovery tools (if your laptop supports them).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
