I have been running the HP Assistant on my laptop in preparation to update to Windows 10 1903. The software was working well until it reached a specific stage in its processes. The display goes BLACK, with the power button and wifi buttons sill ON. I have manually shut down and restarted the laptop, then restarted the Assistant. When the Assistant restarted, it flashed the display a couple of times before going back to BLACK. I let the laptop stay in this mode overnight to see if it would complete the process that was hanging up, but the laptop was in the same condition this morning as it was last night.

Hello @Skcrawford
Thank you for posting in the HP Support Community.
You have 2 options:
1. Uninstall and attempt to reinstall the application - HP Support Assistant (HPSA)
or
2. Just uninstall the app and forget about it
HPSA is an application which delivers some messages from HP to you, provides updates to existing drivers and offers users with some HP info. It may be useful in some cases but is not mandatory app to have or keep on your computer. It's up to you if you want to continue using it. In Windows 10 you can receive updates via other means (like from Windows Update) >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139
With regards to (1)
- Download and run Revo Uninstaller Portable app to complete more in-depth removal of the program and its left overs. Download the portable version >> https://portableapps.com/downloading/?a=RevoUninstallerPortable&n=Revo%20Uninstaller%20Portable&s=s&...
- Run its setup
- Start Revo Uninstaller
- Find HP Support Assistant and proceed to remove it
- Do the same for HP Support Framework (or anything HP Support related)
Note - watch this tutorial about using Revo Uninstaller >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgSJkd11voM
Make sure that at the end of the program uninstallation you also perform ADVANCED scanning and remove any registry and folders leftovers
6. Restart your computer - here are instructions how to do it >> https://www.digitalcitizen.life/7-ways-shut-down-or-restart-windows-10-pc-or-device
7. Download and run Wise Registry Cleaner (portable) from this location >> https://portableapps.com/downloading/?a=WiseRegistryCleanerPortable&n=Wise%20Registry%20Cleaner%20Po...
8. Start Wise Registry Cleaner and perform Deep scanning - remove all errors it may find.
9. Visit this link and re-download HP Support Assistant >> https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html
10. Reinstall HP Support Assistant and see if it will work for you
With regards to option (2)
Click on Start
Type Control Panel
Open Control Panel and navigate to Programs and features
Find "HP Support Assistant" and uninstall it
wait and Find "HP Support Framework" and uninstall it if present
Restart the computer and enjoy life
There are other means for updating the drivers - you can read about them here >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139
Let me know if this works for you.
